David Parsons invited me back for a special crossover with his new podcast series, 120 Months. We discussed the music of the early 1990s, starting with The Sundays and touching on U2, Belle and Sebastian, 10,000 Maniacs, The Alarm, and others. (Available on all platforms.)
The great Joe Strummer would have turned 73 today.
Punk rock, he once said, “ain’t the boots or the hair dye. .. Punk rock means exemplary manners to your fellow human being. .. ‘Always be a punk rocker’ is something everyone can do.”

Few Americans actively support the Trump admin's attacks on higher ed. But, our data show that many seem to have no problem with it.
@stecula.bsky.social and I discuss why Americans should *demand* that our elected officials stand up for higher ed.

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.
Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.
I saw Yo La Tengo in 1990 at The Empire Club in Cleveland. They opened for The Sundays, had a live base, and started the show by saying “sorry we’re not from Manchester.” (The Sundays were from Bristol but it was funny enough that I still remember.)
At NIH, new fudging opportunities (NOFO) will need to be approved by DOGE. That should be a NOGO.

Why does this feel like trade war, university edition?
Seriously, The Beatles and the Stones? Paging @simonreynolds.bsky.social
So thankful for @stevenhyden.bsky.social, his generosity and interest in Jason and my book.
Nostalgia is unfairly maligned. Until there's a future we should be able to listen to nineties rock guilt free
Have you listened to The Sundays Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic yet this year?

What a perfect pleasure to discuss Happy Nostalgia on Nostalgia Trap! Besides our conversation on “Making Connections with the Music of the ‘90s,” David Parsons’ podcast has great topics and interviews with authors from academic presses.

#CUNY
I think a pretty strong case could be made that CUNY is in fact the preeminent and most important American university system.
Ah memories of Radio 1 & John Peel, and hearing Summertime everywhere that year in Blighty 🫶🏾 Thanks so much for posting @roxanneshirazi.bsky.social & for writing @dth20k.bsky.social
So glad to hear of another connection and right on the mark with Blighty, a word like “shan’t” that eludes my American mouth but that made The Sundays seem at once familiar and mysterious to my American ears!
Nothing would make me happier than talking about The Sundays and albums we first had on cassette. Consider my making that happen in early 2025 my first New Year’s resolution!
Thanks so much, Roxanne! I’m glad you made some connections of your own!
I very much enjoyed reading this sonic autoethnography by @dth20k.bsky.social, not least because “Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic” was the first album I purchased with my own money (on cassette!) so it has a special place for me
A Couple Centuries of Sundays cuny.manifoldapp.org/read/a-coupl...
In my chapter, I trace my experiences and education through the changes in technology and culture since the 1990s.
I hope that it is a reminder that there is never a bad time to listen to The Sundays or (re)discover The Softies and Jenny Mae!

I am pleased to share this Open Access Manifold ebook with contributions from students, faculty, and friends of the Masters in Liberal Studies program at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Check it out!

The Graduate Center, where I sit, is in better physical shape than most of CUNY, although a far cry from Princeton. (I don't care) But even elite campuses like Hunter, which are fabulous engines of social mobility, are shockingly under-maintained
If you can help out, or at least share the link I'd be very grateful. A large number of college students experience food insecurity #QCC #CUNY #FoodInsecurity
I always wonder how many plátanos maduros Bartolo Colon would eat if he stopped by.
Fried fish, salted fish, rice and beans, and fried plantains on a white plate
It’s nice to have Dominicans around. From Rice and Beans in Queens Village.
