I'll also state on TDOV that beginning tomorrow you can watch a series of films directed by trans people on the Criterion channel. We programmed this series with love and with hope.

A comic strip titled The Amazing World of Tomorrow.
A food delivery robot cooler drives down a sidewalk.
It crashes into a rental scooter.
It backs up.
It crashes into the rental scooter again. The scooter wobbles.
The scooter falls to the ground as the food delivery robot backs up again.
A driverless taxi crashes into both the scooter and the food delivery robot sending them flying.

screenshot from the linked Vanity Fair article reading as follows:

Though the BAFTAs aired on a tape delay, the slur was nevertheless included in the 7 p.m. broadcast—though the BBC did not air outstanding-British-debut winner Akinola Davies Jr. saying “free Palestine” at the end of his speech, according to Deadline. (The BBC told Deadline that “all edits were made to ensure the program was delivered to time.”) Sinners production designer Hannah Beachler wrote on X that while the Davidson situation “is almost impossible…it happened 3 times that night, and one of the three times was directed at myself on the way to dinner after the show.”

airing the BAFTA award ceremony on a tape delay, leaving in a slur, but editing out "free Palestine"??

that too is a choice, and an egregious one at that!

see that's that bullshit

a tic is involuntary, but BAFTA not saying anything to Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan afterwards is a choice

Remembering the Forgotten Movies of the 2026 Oscar Season | Festivals & Awards | Roger Ebert A salute to the urgent documentaries, quiet dramas and provocative filmmakers who were ignored by Academy voters.

“I’m very happy to pay tribute to 10 great films from the past year whose titles you won’t hear mentioned during the Oscars on March 15,” writes @timgrierson.bsky.social, naming projects like FAMILIAR TOUCH and ON BECOMING GUINEA FOWL.

Statement from Oscar-winning director
Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after l returned from Los Angeles-Shem Tov Lusky-again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank.
Email me to coordinate your visit:

Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky-the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year-came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.

My Father's Shadow review: An enchanting tale of generational memory This is an enchanting film.

I loved Akinola Davies Jr's overwhelming swirl of memory and politics in MY FATHER'S SHADOW when I saw it at Cannes.

It love it even more now. My review via @ebertvoices.bsky.social.

Slices of life in the Sundance shorts section Don't let the excitement of the ritzy feature premieres fool you – Sundance's brightest gems can be found in their excellent shorts programming.

Cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have written about ten of my favorite short films from Sundance, one of which you can actually watch online right now. I cried at some, cackled at others, some were by existing favorites and others were fresh new discoveries. Long live short cinema!!!

Protest breaks out at Dilley immigration detention facility holding 5-year-old Liam Ramos A protest broke out Saturday at the ICE-run South Texas family detention complex in Dilley, where five-year-old Liam Ramos is being detained.

Reminder that, in recent days, children have rallied and protested for their freedom inside an ICE detention center where water has been described as "putrid" and meals reportedly contain “bugs,” dirt, and debris. This is where the kidnapped 5-year-old Liam Ramos is being held.

Prison guards are flocking to ICE jobs and frankly this makes sense. Those of us who have been anti-prison organizers for decades have been saying that fascism already existed within prisons/jails. Our best teachers for how to survive fascism are incarcerated people.

Over the last 5+ years I have interviewed over 130 female directors, cinematographers, or talent who have starred in a film directed by a woman

All of the interviews are linked in the notes of this @letterboxd.social list: letterboxd.com/oldfilmsflic...

It's important to note that this means that only 8% of the top 100 GROSSING films are directed by women. It doesn't mean that 92% of all films are directed by men. It means the films by women are not making as much money. But the directors are there and making films.

Perform empathy. Please. Perform the fuck out of it. It's so good to act with kindness. I hope it penetrates to a place where you feel it, too, but if you must act some way, act the right way. I'm not here to judge your authenticity, I just want you to be kind, thoughtful, and mortified by meanness.

Detailed article from Berkeleyside on Rainbow Families Action's success getting Sutter Health to maintain care for trans kids + summary of what hospitals in California are doing.

Potentially coming up: legal action to get hospitals that aren't providing care to follow CA law and provide care.
