This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

This. It can be hard to remember if you work/volunteer in or are currently under siege via one of the few political areas where Trump has near complete authority (immigration enforcement + the others Jamelle mentions), but they don't control everything, they lose all the time, and we will win.

As an advocate for dark skies …. This is not the right way to do it. There should be no facilities and no lights. 🔭🧪

‘DarkSky International said in its statement that theconstruction of the detention facility "demands the most rigorous application of dark-sky friendly lighting principles."’

AI-Enabled Cheating Points to ‘Untenable’ Peer Review System It’s not clear how widespread the new cheating strategy is, but it’s highlighting longstanding drivers of the peer review crisis some reviewers are now trying to alleviate with AI.

19% of peer reviewers in a Wiley (🥴) survey “said they have used LLMs to ‘increase the speed + ease’ of their reviews.” Meanwhile, some authors are using “indirect prompt injection, which involves inserting hidden white text or other manipulated fonts that tell AI tools to give a… paper 👍 reviews…”

The bass player of TMBG, Danny Weinkauf, is wearing a shirt with a trans flag and says Gender Affirming Care Saves Lives.

I didn’t think it was possible to love TMBG any more than I already do, but here we are.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching.

Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

The most important thing you can do is visibly do things that make sense for you and who you are and where your skills and capabilities lie.

If someone sees you, they will think "oh, it's okay, I'm not alone."

It's the 250th anniversary of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. A local TV station mapped the route out with nods to past and present Boston-area landmarks, including all seven Dunkin' Donuts a modern-day Paul Revere could stop at:

This is the time of year to see the trout lilies sending their stark white rhizomes out into the world, arching over the forest floor. They'll be gone in a month or so. Maple Grove this morning.

Small good things: spring is progressing in the woods around here.

Major good news for my transmasculine readers.

The Washington State Democrats have informed me that the bill will cover 6-month supply stockpiles of testosterone as well.

They were unable to get 12-month supply stockpiles due to its controlled status, but it WAS upgraded from 3 to 6 months.

I saw advice to buy extra cans of food when you’re at the grocery store to donate to the food bank.

I want to politely nudge you to give the money directly to food banks (or to mutual aid groups if you know of any).

We can usually stretch a dollar farther than a dollar’s worth of canned goods

I’ve been getting together sets of stitch markers for the market on May 10th and for my trunk show at Knitty City in NYC on May 31st!

Which of these sets would you most like to take home?

morality aside: it turns out, as a purely sociological matter, that a politics premised on empowering people who loudly and performatively don't care if discriminated-against Others suffer and die results in surprisingly indiscriminate suffering and death. this needs to be explained to people

Philly elected officials say Penn’s removal of DEI websites ceded ground to Trump Penn President Larry Jameson has said that the school must “embrace diversity in all its forms” while following the law. Philadelphia Democratic officials are skeptical of the school's commitment.

A group of state and local elected officials slammed Penn for its response to President Donald Trump’s attacks on diversity initiatives in recent weeks.

The university has pulled down DEI websites at several colleges and plans to dissolve DEI committees at its medical school.

Brown tabby on the back of an armchair, partially lit by an adjustable lamp that’s pointed toward the wall behind her. She’s looking over her shoulder, toward the lightbulb and at an angle to the camera, and the difference between the bright light on her back and the darkness around her chest and paws is pretty dramatic; slightly more than half her face is lit, and the other half is in shadow. (The vertical lamp support is hidden by her body.)

Phoebe really wanted the comfy chair to herself again. (I ceded it because it’s almost bedtime.)

A chart called "how to tell a raven from a crow". An illustration shows that the common raven has long, fancy throat feathers, but the American crow has smooth throat feathers. The raven has a wedge-shaped tail and the crow has a fan-shaped tail. The raven croaks, saying "crroak crroak", but the crow caws, saying "caw caw caw". The raven regularly barrel rolls, and is shown doing a fun roll in the sky, with the sound effect whooooosh. The crow less regularly barrel rolls, and it's shown flying awkwardly and saying "Am I doing it now??" while another crow replies "ummm almost".

How to tell a raven from a crow. An older guide I made with Dr Kaeli Swift. And yes that's an aileron roll, not a barrel roll, but only us nerds know that :)

The annual plumage cycle of a male American Goldfinch – Sibley Guides

Ooh, I just found a fabulous slide show that shows the evolution of the male American Goldfinch plumage through all the months of the year. I wanted to confirm that the bird I saw was a male in winter plumage (it is), and David Sibley, of course, had all the info! So useful. I love my Sibley.

Instructions on Not Giving Up

Ada Limón
1976 –
More than the fuchsia funnels breaking out
of the crabapple tree, more than the neighbor’s
almost obscene display of cherry limbs shoving
their cotton candy-colored blossoms to the slate
sky of Spring rains, it’s the greening of the trees
that really gets to me. When all the shock of white
and taffy, the world’s baubles and trinkets, leave
the pavement strewn with the confetti of aftermath,
the leaves come. Patient, plodding, a green skin
growing over whatever winter did to us, a return
to the strange idea of continuous living despite
the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then,
I’ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf
unfurling like a fist to an open palm, I’ll take it all.

I’m feeling impatient for spring this morning, so for #SaturdayPoem we’re anticipating the season a bit.
