The pilot edition of Joker's Wild was recorded on this day in 1969. It wasn't transmitted, but a series (the first of nine) began airing in July 1969.

Worse than limited opening hours, it's the withdrawal of 2/3 of the archive for curiosity-driven research that is the real scandal for what is supposed to be a public-service organization.

Someone's asked me about the first piece of music played in the interval on this Open University clip from March 1983 (begins at 1:55). I don't know what it is but someone on here might know; it's an interesting piece of continuity nevertheless youtu.be/rWx-2oA-2F8?...

Scholars urge BBC to rethink changes to archive access

Was it Janice Long on 3-2-1?
That remarkable story about Blatty on You Bet Your Life has made me think of this:
I know of one person who appeared on a quiz or game show as a member of the public contestant and later on the same show as a celebrity contestant. Who was it - and is this unprecedented?
Who knew that Count Arthur Strong had made a guest appearance in Z Cars in 1964?
IN Good Morning Britain (ITV), which was loaded well over the Plimsolls and indeed, over the 'Wellies, with April 1 jokers, Derek Jameson showed a Sunday headline " Libya Death Threat to Albert Tatlock." The incessant tippling at the Rover's Return was, appar-ently, getting up orthodox Arab noses. It was unfortunate—though It should have been foresee-able—that TVam news almost instantly announced that 88-year-old Jack Howarth, who played Albert Tatlock in Cor-onation Street, had died in the night. In a perfect world, one feels, the director would not have let the pre-recorded programme roll on regardless with Jameson ho'hoing hear-tily " I love the idea of poor Albert Tatlock in his hotel this morning eating his eggs and bacon and hearing the Libyan death squads arc after him." And David Frost spreading oil on troubled Tatlocks. " Absolutely. Let's reassure him absolutely about that."
The best media April Fool jokes are the ones that get inadvertently poleaxed by real events.

This slide was so filthy, even a transmission controller at HTV Cymru Wales in 1980 would've gone "ooh, time we got a new one of those."

A very 'make more sketch comedy' to all the commissioners who absolutely are not on here
If you remember the final version of Ceefax, which ran from around 1996 until DSO - from 1998 it was produced by boxes like these.
You can tell they're the real deal because they're beige.
They are essentially PCs running MS-DOS with a fancy teletext inserter ISA card.
More to follow.
Not seen this before and there's lots to love here for anyone interested in the history of BBC outside broadcasting www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqjC...

Radio Times cover for the 1965 remake of "Nineteen Eighty-Four", starring David Buck.
Pleased to note that "Devil's Planet" (the second of the recovered "Doctor Who" episodes) aired on the same weekend as another much longed for and cherished TV recovery - the David Buck / Jane Merrow / Joseph O'Connor version of "Nineteen Eighty-Four". That was a good couple of days for telly.

Exciting news for all #DoctorWho fans. Unseen in 61 years. Not just Daleks, Hartnell & Purves but more Douglas Camfield & Terry Nation, Nick Courtney's DW debut & two more eps with Adrienne Hill as short-lived Katarina. Here's @radiotimes.bsky.social coverage from 1965

Key takeaways:
-6 Doctor Who episodes found in the same collection, 4 of which existed - but are likely to be higher quality copies than the ones we have.
-We have significantly overlooked "the ecosystem" between shared film & TV facilities for 1st-generation cutting copies.
