I think it's important that we try not to always be passive absorbers of our media, but to engage with it thoughtfully in a way that helps us grow safer and stronger. And for people with complex trauma it can be validating to see your messed up family on the screen.
I don't invalidate people's desire to want to avoid triggering things, it's taken me a while to get around to the Pitt for that reason. We need fun in our entertainment, and it's also a good venue for character study, for what does this toxicity look like without having to expose yourself directly.
There's also some comeuppance fantasy. People who admired Tony Soprano somehow missed that he kept shooting himself in the foot repeatedly as the show would go on. That as he gave in to his worst instincts, his life got worse. A different fantasy, sure, that terrible people suffer under themselves.
I recognize not everyone enjoys TV about terrible people doing terrible things but when it's done well it can be amazingly relatable. For example I can relate very strongly to the quality of parenting in Shameless with a side of Succession.
