Tackling the growing burden of diet-related diseases cannot be achieved by single policies alone.
It requires a coordinated mix of policies and incentives that work together to encourage reformulation and reshape the food system 🤝

Graphic of soft drinks alongside text: "The SDIL has achieved a 46% reduction in sugar content in drinks. Mandated policies clearly work and do good for public health."
The Soft Drinks Industry Levy turned 8 years old yesterday!
Since it began, it has slashed the sugar content in drinks, proven the impact of mandated policies, and is a strategy that the government can - and must - learn from to improve the nutritional quality of all food and drink 🥇

📢 "It is shocking that after nearly a decade of promises, eight consultations, four delays and constant lobbying, the UK could be left with unhealthy food advertising rules that affect as little as 1% of ad spend."

👀 Fascinating new @foodrise.bsky.social blog - with the Autumn Budget quietly boosting the UK's access to cheap sugar, its become clear that if we're serious about protecting health then trade and public health policies must better align - rather than contradict.

With excess salt a major driver of high blood pressure, consumers can’t simply “opt out” when so much is added before food is even purchased.
Responsibility sits with government and the food industry, not individuals alone.

In the report we found:
🔹Nearly 1 in 4 supermarket soups exceed the Governments maximum salt target.
🔹Almost 1 in 6 would receive a red front-of-pack warning label for high salt.
🔹Some tins contain almost an entire adult’s daily salt limit in one go!

A single pack of soup can contain more salt than two McDonald’s cheeseburgers! 🚨
Soup is often viewed as a healthy, convenient lunch option - but how much salt are some soups hiding?

Science, food environments, and public health needs have all moved. But what hasn’t moved since 2004 is the Nutrient Profile Model...
…up until this week!
We joined @oha-updates.bsky.social to discuss why this model was in urgent need of a revamp and what it now means for public health 👇
Quote tile: "We welcome the government’s long-awaited update to the Nutrient Profile Model, which represents a clear improvement on the outdated 2004 model and better reflects current evidence on free sugars. Now's the time to close those loopholes, apply the model consistently, and let the product speak for itself, not the marketing. - Sonia Pombo Head of Research and Impact at Action on Salt"
At last, the Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) has been updated 🎉
The updated model brings in some important changes that set better food standards and aligns more strongly with scientific evidence, encouraging healthier options for all.

Junk food companies are exploiting every loophole to push unhealthy food on young people🎯
Does the new advertising ban go far enough if it misses out outdoor advertising and still lets companies advertise their brand name anywhere they like?

⚠️ The food environments around us play a key and fundamental role in shaping what we eat, and when high salt and sugar foods are the cheapest and easiest available, public health suffers.

The Soft Drinks Industry Levy has cut the sugar in soft drinks across the UK and last week's news of its expansion is a promising step forward for public health.
We spoke to @cbsnews.com on how the levy has protected the health of children and how it differs from U.S policies 👇

The SDIL Expansion - quote from Dr Kawther Hashem: "We know the levy works and when the rules are clear and consistent, manufacturers act fast. Today's welcomed announcement builds on that progress, but if we're truly committed to improving the nation's health, and the nation's teeth, we'll need to be even more ambitious"
Fantastic news for sugar reduction - an expansion of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL) AND a lower sugar threshold! 🎉
The SDIL has already cut vast levels of sugar out of UK diets and today’s news builds crucially on that progress.
