"woke 1" was the result of insights that were once confined to marginal activist and academic spaces becoming widespread. the only way that "woke 2" will be more consequential than the first round is through further insight that gives people greater *impact*, not more awareness of how bad things are

it's certainly not that liberals secretly have all the answers, but that there are subtle limits to leftist thought that are rarely recognized and that more liberals involved will force the issue in a way i believe would be extremely productive
minneapolis was interesting not just because it was an amazing example of direct action getting the goods, but also because it saw wholehearted support from liberals both online and on-the-ground in a way that can build trust necessary for productive *conversations*
since the end of 2024, there's been talk of "Woke 2" that has gotten more serious this year as the trump regime stumbles. much of that discourse takes the form of policy and while important, i think that ignores more interesting possibilities and developments
this essay is about that
maybe the whole -punk suffix was a mistake from the start since gibson et al of cyberpunk fame, weren't really interested in a specific politics but more a vibe
eh there's plenty of non pastoral solarpunk, some of the first images i saw was of the urbanist variety like below
i think the failure to depict the transition is far more important because i think there is considerable political possibilities in renewables and batteries that could get squandered
right, this is fighting a decade old semantic battle but i wouldn't call that "punk"
my favorite example of "omnicause" sneering are people who praise YIMBYism as an alternative approach that achieves success through a narrow focus when its really trivial to make the connection between housing availability and any number of issues (climate, labor, gender, sexuality, race, etc etc)
yeah basically it's a slur for anyone who recognizes how various forms of oppression and domination are interlinked

sure walkable green urban spaces with flowing architecture is nice to look at, but right now the real solarpunks are rogue hacker-electricians who install solar panels by day and get paid by sketchy psuedoanonymous crypto to sabotage fossil fuel infrastructure by night
in retrospect the problem with solarpunk (as i experienced it anyway) was that as a bunch of pretty pictures it shied away from the social and geopolitical upheaval that will come with replacing the fundamental energy infrastructure of our civilization
the "right-wing authoritarianism construct" is great because it involves asking questions like "do you think that a guy dressed as darth vader should be blindly followed while the imperial march plays" and people will respond with "strongly agree"

i have an short essay in the works on this about why there might be something more to "Woke 2" than people wishcasting better progressive social movements or democratic politicians 👀👀
this is an understandable conclusion to be drawn from the state of the discourse. thankfully if there has been a single advance in our understanding of society since 1948 you can get an edge in the discourse by considering said advances
this seems along the lines of bruce sterling's attention conservation notice

My expectation for this war was 'everyone loses,' but to be honest, if those terms hold and Iran gets to pull in $40bn a year from the Strait to fund their proxies and build their nuclear program - if this is the deal - then honestly the Iranian regime simply...won.
that said i didn't know that thompson goes into the influence of utilitarianism on the working class! thanks @nikvenkatesh.bsky.social, that's another reason for me to try and get through Making of the English Working Class this year
