NASA’s Artemis II returned from the moon just in time for Earth Day Fresh takes on Apollo’s famous “Earthrise” and “Blue Marble” images showed off our planet’s beauty just weeks before Earth Day

Today is Earth Day. Two weeks ago, humans saw the Earth from the moon for the first time in 54 years. I wanted to know what historians were thinking about the moment, and the images we all loved so much. 🧪 🌍

It’s an EXPERIENCE. So much in that movie made me question whether or not it was real, but I’ve sure seen it twice so it must be!

And yeah, if we take the Hobbits as this secluded, “normal” group thrust into magic that makes no sense to them and conflict greater than them and, well, myth, it does match up…!

Likely! A LOT of Russia lit of that time was grappling with an unstable/tumultuous societal order which went hand in hand with grappling with religion and its role and the idea of a new “age.” (I’ve only really studied Russian lit as part of Russian history classes, so my analysis is biased.)

I wonder if that may speak to how myth-building-based Tolkien is, putting him in a fantasy that feels a bit more of a kind with fabulism in particular even if it’s very much a fantastical world.

I got nothin’ on the Russian lit connection though, outside of that being unrelentingly, messily human.

Yeah! I took some group classes last year and this year I’m doing individual! I really love it, but yeah, it does not always play nice with work schedules.

The rink was playing Simple and Clean during my first lesson of this semester and I am taking that as a blessing on my ice skating antics.

It’s a NICE lot! The Malabrigo and Noro are also lovely but that one is just so knitter-friendly and pretty. 🤣

Yeah, seconding this lot! DK is a friendly weight for knitting, too, plus that color is lovely.

I think my most insufferable party trick is being able to do Not Getting Married Today at the drop of a hat.

In hindsight, it is a minor miracle I did not inflict this party trick on my sister last weekend.

You have to want to understand how a specific person’s mind works/what caused them to be Like That or the person needs to have been impactful enough that you’re like “why did this person matter (and how did they get Like That).”

That said I’m not big on them either. I find them kinda invasive!

Still thinking about how a new evolution is also new species per Pokemon rules, that nuance had me at war with myself.

The Pokémon universe goes hard on ecology and climate science The Pokémon franchise, including its recent game Pokémon Pokopia, is inspired by real animals and their ecology. It’s no surprise that so many scientists love to try and “catch ’em all”

Editing this @sciam.bsky.social piece brought the six-year-old Pokémon trainer in me. Thanks @whysharksmatter.bsky.social for the nostalgia trip (and for allowing me to flex my Pokémon knowledge)! www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-...

As someone who was in a College of Cardinals crisis committee, you’re right and you should say it.

LRP: I literally made the quip “I’m not a Christian, but I did play one in a model UN crisis committee,” so I cosign that this is 100% MUN.

(I was in a College of Cardinals crisis committee. When I told the chair on the last day I was Jewish he looked like I’d slapped him, he was so shocked.)

I have been singing this song all week, and no one else remembers the song so I have been feeling very alone in this endeavor.

I have no good words for today, but my cat is incredibly cute and we all find reasons and ways to keep going.

(Godspeed, Narrator/Arbiter, having to deliver the lines about “the closest we’ve come to nuclear war” tonight! 🫠)

Chess is one of my favorite weird musicals and the current Broadway version leans HARD into the specter of nuclear war (it has always been a Cold War musical but this staging takes it to the next level).

This is from the Chess in Concert version but STILL HITS.

What a time to have Chess back on Broadway.
