Interesting concept, inspired by Country Overshoot Day and the like. For Belgium, we've passed our energy dependence day already. It was April 7 .... Net fossil fuel imports account for 73.4% of primary energy demand.

Picture showing the percentage of wholesale gas covered by Russian long-term contracts, domestic production, other long-term contracts and spot / flexible LNG. 2021 vs. 2022
As a prep for an interview with a journalist, I looked for info on the prevalence of long-term contracts for gas in Europe. I found this: globallnghub.com/europes-expo... I don’t know whether the situation in 2026 is similar, but if it is, it’s time for the industry to hire more risk managers. 😱
Timely info for those who worry about energy prices. The study comes from Norway. #substitutioneffect
In Belgium in 2025, wholesale electricity prices were negative for 408 hours. Not a great deal for producers. Today, incumbent Engie announces free electricity for its clients when this happens. #demandflexibility www.lecho.be/monargent/en...

Nice win-win way to phase-out gas: the utility identifies pipelines due for replacement. If it is cheaper to electrify all the buildings served by that pipeline than digging, they pay for electrification. In Belgium, we're still extending the gas network 🙁
My first COP ! 😀 Looking forward to share our proposals for decarbonisation, nature restoration and conservation, and intl cooperation and climate finance alongside a great group of co-authors. Link to join online 👇
German taxpayers are handing BMW €273m to once again attempt to push hydrogen-powered cars, when battery prices have once again dropped >50% in the past ~18 month and CATL is on its 5th-gen LFP battery.
CATL, BYD et al must be laughing all the way to the bank.
Sigh.

On how priority rules in school admissions can contribute or instead harm educational equity (access to effective schools). Based on data from all secondary schools and local authorities in England. 🏫
One of the key barriers to electrification is the ratio of electricity to gas prices.
The tax rate on electricity used in industry is much higher in most European countries than the tax rate on fossil gas.

A quote from robertreich.substack.com/p/a-betrayal... that also applies to our leaders in the EU. Time to uphold int'l and humanitarian law. Time to ask for journalists to be let in. And of course high time to let humanitarian organizations and food in.
Does it work for conservation ? Our proposal is best suited for re/afforestation. The economics of the conservation is very different & the flow benefits are smaller. Maybe w/ blended finance. 6/6
