there are _so many_ reasons a site could go down and it is almost never hacking/malware. Near perfect uptime is both difficult and expensive no matter what you're attempting to do. Most of the time the reason a site goes down is not unlike "tripping over a power cord" (most often misconfigured DNS)

On filing the corners off my MacBook I file the sharp corners off my MacBooks. People like to freak out about this, so I wanted to post it here to make sure that everyone who wants to freak out about it gets the opportunity to do so.

idk why it took me until reading this to realize that I could just file down the sharp edges of my macbook kentwalters.com/posts/corners/

Lunar Flyby - NASA

Oh this is great: there’s now an #Artemis II Lunar Flyby Gallery on the NASA images site: www.nasa.gov/gallery/luna... (thx @dpmanchee.bsky.social for pointing it out)

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

Original post on federate.social

I was recently reminded of this.

A couple decades ago, I wrote a short paper that described how the basic approaches of cryptography and computer security lead to an efficient and practical privilege escalation attack against master-keyed mechanical lock, which I published in IEEE Security and […]

Stunning new revelation: Epstein hung out almost exclusively with guys who had black boxes where their heads should be.

This is a pretty interesting piece. Love or hate the idea of mixing federal pardons with state crimes, you need to read this.

I really wish we'd stop calling them climate "skeptics" or "vaccine skeptics", if you jump off a cliff we don't call you a "gravity skeptic"

"It’s impossible to say when IT will HAPPEN. But it can’t be too long until IT HAPPENS. Looking at the data, it is statistically plausible that IT will HAPPEN in the next thirty-six months. Eighteen, if you factor in hamburger consumption and all the weird bruising."
