Distracted from work and game dev today and It finally happened...

1 year ago 3 0 0 0

The first one was my first month of working with pixel art, so was a means to an end. 😄 I've studied a ton of artists on here and in the wider pixel art gaming space and really learned a lot.

I'm glad you like the fro! ❤️ She's pretty stylish for a wannabe hero.

I do like the second, but the smaller sprite works a bit better in the game so I moved back towards the shorter sprite while keeping aspects of the larger one.

The taller sprite looked a bit too big in dungeon scenes and wasn't working as well with the 3/4 view.

Thank you! I feel like I’ve really come a long way in the last few months.

Iterating Sprite style until I find ‘the one’. Last one felt just a little too tall.

Latest goes back toward the Moonlighter style that inspired me in the first place.

Timelapse of the giant knight. Did a bit of design as I went through. Spot when I remembered that Chance is right-handed 😂.

Warning: There might be a bit of flashing in the video as I turn layers on and off.

This giant knight is the boss of an abandoned fortress in the depths of a forest. How does a small adventurer fell such a terrible foe?

Just one of the many bosses in Chance and the Time Wizards’ Curse.

What would the enemies in your game be like if they were #Pokémon cards?

I am afraid I might have become too attached to them. I might make them invincible.

A small slime swinging from a tree branch in vivid colour. Another slime sleeps in the hollow of the tree.

Did a fun exercise to showcase one of my simplest yet most charming of enemies, the humble slime. All they really want to do is hang out in the forest and live their happy lives.

Should I turn this into a phone wallpaper?

As well as the pixel art, over the last few days I've worked on some snappy camera transitions between areas.

Thank you! I've spent a lot of time working on the pixel art.

Woodland scene has gone from test to in-game. Chance now has access to that little chest!

I like that too, the shadow needs some consideration for those because the rocks are part of the tree sprite. It’s in my notes from today’s testing. But I like the way it blends the tree with the walls.

An update for the art test for the forest area of my game, Chance and the Time Wizards’ Curse. The slimes look right at home with their camouflage here. As does the new tree style!

The canvas is 256x256 for this piece. I embellished the sprite a bit so the sprite itself is roughly 130x170.

Pixel art tree sprite

Had to take a little break from #pixelart for a week or so because I’d just been hammering it too hard and my mind was a bit of a mush. Came back to it today with this lovely tree sprite for my game.

Great read to start the year. Actually useful info, especially from a UK point of view.

However there are ways I could retain this type of transition and still get the benefits. I'll play around with the camera a bit and see what feels good.

Ah that's interesting feedback, These are actually planned, but I can play around with ideas. Dungeons in particular tend to benefit from the fixed camera. My intention is to actually make some rooms a lot bigger than those you would find in aLttP, which I hope also helps with the modernization.

Chance's animations are still old but the dungeon sprites from the art test look super nice in-game. Has that #zelda feel just moving around.

Plenty still to do but off to a good start in 2025.

What do you think?

I'm tired tipsy. Thank goodness it just hit 0000, can go to bed now. Happy New Years!

Happy 2025!

I have two goals this year:

- Buy a new house
- release a demo for Chance and the Time Wizards' Curse.

Let's see how it goes!

I do enjoy the irony of calling someone closed-minded for talking about and presumably analysing new tools and digital trends.

It's a truly great game. The layers of storytelling are weaved into the game seamlessly. It really feels like you're an archaeologist discovering a lost civilization. You do it so naturally, the game invites you to explore it's solar system and who are we to deny ourselves of it's secrets.

So, there has to be a better version of the sprite and tilemap editor in Unity right? Godot 4's is way better at this point and let's face it, that's not perfect.

Anyone found any good tools to try?

Merry Christmas from me to all those who follow me - all 1.7k of you, wow! I hope that if you are celebrating you have a wonderful festive day. And if you're not just have a good day anyway, you deserve it.

Happy holidays! I hope I can show you more of Chance and the Time Wizards' Curse' very soon.

This is probably why I've done more work on the look of my game than the mechanics so far. It feels far more relaxing to work on pixel art than doing more coding after coding all day for my employer.

Nice! I am 4 cards away, but keep pulling Holos that I already have. I don't even have the Mew from the new set.
