Black text on a yellow background reads: “Authors Against Book Bans speak out” and “Ryan Estrada” accompanied by an image of a man wearing glasses and the cover of the book “Banned Book Club”

Black text on a white background that reads, “What’s your name and most challenged book?” “My name is Ryan Estrada. Ironically, my book Banned Book Club, which I wrote with my wife Kim Hyun Sook about her experiences smuggling illegal books under a dictator in 1980s Korea, has been banned in six different cities. My second most banned book is Occulted, about how my friend Amy Rose used banned books to escape a UFO death cult. I guess the book banners really don’t like to see that their tactics are the same as despots and cult leaders.”

Black text on a white background that reads, “What’s your experience with being banned?” “I thought I was writing about history. When we started writing in 2017, book banning was not a topic of discussion in the US. In fact, the reason we got our book deal was that the editor was SHOCKED at the idea that South Korea was only a few decades away from having state-banned books. By the time the book came out three years later, not only were books being banned by the hundreds, but our book quickly became one of them.”

They claim to be a giant network of parents concerned about pornography in schools, but that’s all a lie. It’s like a dozen people, and I know all of them [...] None of them have children in the school districts they target. Many don’t even live in those districts and drive in from another state. They are political operatives, funded by organizations whose investments in private schools are benefited by making public schools worse, or whose campaigns benefit from damaging libraries.

Bill that would have allowed firings of library board members fails in Alabama Legislature | Alabama Reflector The legislation allows for cities and counties to remove members of local library boards at their discretion with or without cause.

In some good news, the Alabama bill that would have allowed easy firing of library board members–the folks who won't follow in lock-step with partisan book banning–has failed.

It is April of 2026. School started in August. Canyon ISD has not ordered any books this school year. That is the harm to our academic students from SB13 implementation. Nothing in the law prohibits books from being ordered, but this is the outcome many of us predicted. @txfreedomread.bsky.social

This is basically the fed gov't saying, hey, if you don't teach our point of view, then we're gonna take away your $.

It's playground bully mentality, not policy. This is extortion. When Common Core was introduced, Republicans were up in arms about this kind of mandate coming from the central govt.

It's not just my opinion. Studies show that access to diverse books positively impacts children's reading scores. This fabulous study from First Book explains this in detail.

Successful readers read widely, and that means reading all kinds of books.

As AI enters book ban disputes, here’s what it means for school districts Tools seeking to help districts get ahead of challenges have resulted in auto-flags for thousands books, from political memoirs to the works of Shakespeare.

this is such bs schools are using ai to flag thousands of books and suddenly libraries are shutting down over it… like since when did robots decide what kids can read, thoughts?

In 2025, library funding ballot measures passed at an 80% rate nationwide.
But there’s a catch: voters are saying “yes” to keeping what they have, and “maybe” to anything new. Read our analysis today!

Hays CISD approves $12M in budget cuts for next school year The district plans to cut or change 125 positions and suspend stipends for 970 employees.

Very disappointed in @hayscisd.bsky.social decision to reduce all secondary librarians in a growing school district whose students compete with Central Tx students who DO have librarians. It hurts their college/career preparation, will impact reading and literacy. @kvue www.kvue.com/article/news...
