YUP. it's easier to cling to meritocracy--often while writing about how those are mythic in other contexts--than investigate one's own privilege.

but don't even get me started on how folks from older generations got TT jobs without publications, conference presentations, monographs, etc. (or with comparatively few)

I think it's very hard for many TT faculty to admit that luck played a huge role in their employment situations. yes, they worked hard. yes, they're very smart and talented. but most people who didn't get TT jobs had identical CVs.

(but then he caused me deep--though unintended!--harm by telling me re: the TT market, "good people get good jobs." which led me to wonder if I wasn't good people when I ended up in what I know everyone saw as a less than good job. so nobody's perfect ๐Ÿ˜‚)

I have MANY thoughts about this. like 1) yes. and 2) one of my best professors had spent several years as a curator at the Smithsonian, which enabled him to mentor and support students in all kinds of ways most of my profs couldn't.

I really do need to do this, because I have lots that are very far from what I require these days. thanks for the reminder!!

that thing where you scratch your glasses trying to get the pollen off, but the fact that you keep all of your old glasses in a box at the top of the closet FINALLY pays off. yes, that thing.

totally reasonable! the only book on my TBR set in Chinatown is a contemporary (Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu), so I'm out of historical recs. but given that I adored Last Night at the Telegraph Club and Siren Queen, I'm going to check out these other two!

unfortunately, it is in our faculty handbook, it's just that my department had always interpreted that clause as only applying to TT faculty. but the president issued a decree saying it's *all* full-time faculty, TT and NTT. they've made it clear they're going to take attendance too. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

The company that does regalia for my alma mater doesn't have their prices online, but reddit leads me to believe the hood alone would cost me about $140. No thanks!

'The Brightest Star' tells Anna May Wong's life story from her imagined perspective NPR's Ailsa Chang talks with author Gail Tsukiyama about her new novel The Brightest Star, a fictional account of the life of actress Anna May Wong.

Ha, I'm sorry. It's just so perfectly on trend. This one, I haven't read, but I heard the interview on NPR www.npr.org/2023/06/20/1...

Literally, the faculty at my institution are in open rebellion against the president, provost, and board of visitors. This is just another outrage on the pile. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thank you!!! Maybe I didn't lose it, then.

Thank you for this!! I'm wondering if they only let us keep the tam unless we shelled out for the hood.
