We went mixed-agility at my previous school and I didn't think it allowed for adequate stretch.

Do you prefer setting or mixed-agility?

not sure if this is a debate over the value of the task in Q or over whether Qs like this should be asked in exams, but they are asked in exams, and therefore it would be negligent to not train them in this

1) in the workshop I argued that "find boundaries and check" as a method is closer to a universal through method than sketch a graph, as it will work the same for linear and 2d inequalities, so it works as a strategy for all inequalities

2) I argued this later in workshop:

You can check all the regions or you can assume one and not check any others and risk it

Obv if they asked xยฒ>0 this would all fall down but it's not happened yet!

Will reply to this one so it is part of the thread Alex can see

You do a check of one of the regions, so here you substitute 0 in and compare -15 to 0 and see if the inequality holds, this helps you to decide if the region works or not

The boundary pts are the points of equality, they are the boundaries between it being correct and incorrect on the check

Does that answer or were you asking about something else?

Didn't get to speak to @mathsjem.bsky.social about Matt's session but it reminded me of that poster literallyjquestions on twitter from about 5 years ago if she remembers! I'm sure I remember Jo mentioning them once or twice #mathsconf40

Not sure if they still have an online presence!

#mathsconf40 reminded me how awesome the community is despite the social media lull nowadays.

Really enjoyed the sessions I was part of, particularly @mr-man-maths.bsky.social international questions... rich seam!

Had a really good day at #MathsConf40. It was great to see everyone there and every session was brilliant.

I wouldn't use it away from exam prep, personally

I think for my learners it will be useful to pick out which techniques to use w/ additional algebra challenge

the session was thinking about understanding which operator you would use in different circumstances, from perspective of FE gcse resit

I like this trio of questions that Shamim Brek has presented here, will be doing this with my mixed tier group on Monday morning #mathsconf40

We thought we had a student like that last year. Everyone thought she was getting a U. At the start of yr 12 people were cursing that she had got a grade 6 at gcse and look how weak her maths is and she will never succeed.

She got a D. There were tears on results day. She worked so hard.

We do calculus and logarithms. We want them to sit next to grade 9 students and see something that is new to both of them.

5 days ago 3 0 0 0

Yeah it's how it is pitched to the students absolutely, but most i hear about are using it to make sure they have a conversation so they can be encouraged to do something else

5 days ago 1 0 1 0

They all do the homework, some take longer on it than others. Not sure we teach anything that they know already in any great depth, apart from the ones who do the gcse fm qualifications, but the majority dont do that

maybe everyone else's recruitment picture is an absolute doddle and they have a pick of teachers, but how we can whine about recruitment targets when we literally act like gatekeepers beggar's belief

And they will be better than non specialists and some of them will be better teachers than the A/A* teachers

And then there is entry criteria, was hearing about a school putting there entry criteria up to an 8 for A level maths. Absolutely astonishing and so callous and brutal.

Some maths teachers will be ones who get A and A* at A level but some will be grade 6 GCSE and D grade at A level

When she was reflecting on an A level lesson she had watched fyi

I did a "teaching A level" session for @mrmattock.bsky.social trainees, one of them goes "i wanted to ask this teacher, why haven't you done any assessment in this lesson?"

5 days ago 0 0 1 0

SoW start with material that has already been mastered by most grade 9 students so that they are "shown the pace" of the course and made to feel like they fail immediately
