Brief fun survey from Jessica, Andrew & myself:
If you are a faculty member, research scientist, postdoc, or senior Ph.D. student in any area of science, please take five minutes and fill it out. We’ll share the results widely along with some reflections.

Cette application permet d’identifier facilement des plantes. Mais c’est aussi un programme de recherche participative précieux pour les scientifiques !

Many thanks to my colleague who 3D printed one of my evolved tooth shapes — looking forward to many fun ones to play with! 🦷🦷🦷 #EvoDevo #Tooth #ToothMaker

« world leadership goes through investing in research and science »… France is clearly shooting itself in the foot (again) by announcing new major budget cuts with immediate effects on all @cnrs.fr institutes! 😩
“They’re destroying more than fifty research facilities..labs that house decades of irreplaceable long-term science, the kind you literally cannot restart once it’s gone. And they’re replacing all of it..with fifteen political appointees”

Very cool!
Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel.
King 5 reports that he held a valid visa that was rescinded without explanation.
A French coder estimates that using Claude Code will account for 1 tonne of CO2 over a year - 10% of the average French individual carbon footprint.
We have never encountered emissions-intensive software like this, ever before (with the sole exception of Bitcoin)

I’ve been warned that by engaging in politics, I might undermine myself as a scientist. Or worse, reduce the trust that people have in me or scientists as a whole.
This latter point is the thesis of a recent article by Byron Hyde: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
I disagree for multiple reasons.
Sharif University in Tehran was just bombed
Founded in 1965, it is one the most elite science and engineering institutions in the world. Alumni include the mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, first woman to win the Fields Medal
Here is the list of other alumni

American and Israeli missiles hit Sharif University in Tehran tonight. Often called #Iran’s MIT, the institution has been home to some of the country’s best and brightest minds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics since 1966. 1/2
“When scientists ‘rack their brains’ to approach computer science differently
At a conference held at the University of Luxembourg in March, around fifty researchers gathered for three days to discuss some thirty concrete examples of ‘undone science’.”

IMPACT OF PARENTHOOD ON UNIVERSITY EMPLOYMENT. Line graph shows how the probability of holding a research position changes from four years before to seven years after having children.
Becoming a parent is much more detrimental to women’s academic careers than it is to men’s

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
Fantastic news -- how about scientific journals now?

I agree, to me this shows that the structure/connectivity of the fitness landscape, as given both by the set of genotypes and the mutational operators, is key to understanding trajectories

In academia, we're good at talking about successes, but sweep unfunded grants & unsuccessful job apps under the rug. It can be a tough road, filled w/ failure*
For anyone discouraged about the process, here's my failure CV

*None are really failures if you learn from them
Super interesting work!
If I understand correctly, in your model mutations are only bit flips in the genotype; if you haven't looked at it, considering other mutations can also influence evol. trajectories by changing the connectivity of the fitness landscape (see journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...)

This is excellent: “The question is not whether Cofnas should be permitted to hold his views. The question is whether a public research university in Belgium should be lending institutional credibility to those views, funding their dissemination, and providing them the cover of academic legitimacy”
