The unholy alliance between Catholicism and RW Evangelicalism is a big factor.

Vatican II was before my time (but my parents told me about their pre-V2 experiences). I grew up in NYC in 70s/80s & that catholic church of that time would be considered liberal compared to what some in the *US* catholic church now are doing. It was like such a 180° swing. I hope they swing back!
