Heartbreaking and devastating news from NSF.
NSF grant terminations are disproportionately affecting underrepresented scientists. 58% of canceled grants have women PIs, despite making up only 34% of awards. 17% of canceled grants have Black PIs (versus 4% of the pool). Hispanic and disabled PIs are twice as likely to have NSF grants canceled.
I resigned because of a profound breakdown in governance, transparency, and accountability at the NSF—issues I felt obligated to bring to public attention.
"Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingo‘s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."
🧪 PRACTICAL tip for NSF PIs with terminated grants:
You're entitled to recover more closeout costs than a DOGE-fueled NSF may lead you to believe.
➡️ Do this NOW: Send fed reg 2 CFR 200.472 on allowable "termination costs" to your sponsored research office:

Oh you're keeping it 100? That's cool. I'm keeping it probably like 83
