A sparrowhawk, with dappled white and dark wings a flap, dark upper body, and grasping yellow legs, comes to rest on black plastic tubing, with one piercing yellow eye glaring at the camera, and a red morsel of meat in a talon!

This little fella, which I think is a sparrowhawk, came to visit the garden today with breakfast in talon!

Musketeer d'Artagnan's remains believed found under Dutch church D'Artagnan was killed during the Siege of Maastricht in 1673 and later immortalised in the stories of Alexandre Dumas.

An unusual story this morning!

"Jos Valke, deacon at St Peter and Paul church, helped unearth the skeleton and is 99% certain that the remains belong to Charles de Batz de Castelmore, a close aide to France's Sun King Louis XIV who was known as Count d'Artagnan"

East London at its Thamesy, industrial, muddy best. The boy as a bird sculpture in the docks has a coot nesting at its feet which was nice so that the sculpture didn’t look as lonely.

Thanks Tash, that's very kind of you to say! I was admiring the view and taking some holiday photos - despite the rain - when the sunlight just flooded out and transformed the view!

Thanks David! And absolutely right about it being a view from The Glass House - I got very lucky taking some holiday photos, when that same golden light just came out from behind the rain clouds. A sight to behold.

There's an image of the lyrics of the song Tomorrow as sung by Andrea McArdle in 1977 - the words shown are: The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow there'll be sun.

This song is sadly misleading. Perhaps the sun does come out, elsewhere. Not here.

On the eve of the 4th anniversary of Russia’s full-scale war, we raise the Ukrainian flag at our headquarters.

So it can fly proudly at the heart of our Union, where it belongs.

One day Ukraine will be safe.

Ukraine will be free.

Ukraine will be part of our European family.

Four years have passed since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia was supposed to win in three days. Instead, Ukraine reinvented modern warfare, built a drone industry, and can destroy a thousand Russian soldiers in a day. Ukraine can win.

A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power From CNN’s Abby Phillip, a triumphant new look at Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaigns of the 1980s and how they changed Black political powerβ€œA joyful, rich, must-read biography of a politician whose flaws and gifts were in constant, intense competition.” β€”Jake TapperJesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, activist, raconteur, and political candidate, finally gets a book worthy of his stature courtesy of CNN anchor Abby Phillip.Focusing on his presidential runs in 1984 and, especially, 1988, Phillip highlights how Jackson built an unlikely coalition that showed how Black political power could be consolidated. His experience working under Martin Luther King; his organizing the SLCC’s Operation Breadbasket in Chicago and beyond; and his roots in the deep South combined into two astonishingly impactful presidential campaigns. Appealing to the working people of urban enclaves like that of Chicago, young people on college campuses, and Black people across the South, he created the modern Democratic coalitionβ€”one that has been used by all major Democrats seeking national success from Obama to Biden to Harris. With her expert reporting, natural storytelling skills, and a story so full of humanity, politics, and hope, Abby Phillip has written a rousing popular history that sheds new light on an American icon.

A good day to get "A Dream Deferred," the highly readable Abby Phillip biography of Jesse Jackson that came out last October. For those who remember what a significant figure he was in his time and those too young to remember.

He was 84. β€œOur father was a servant leader β€” not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement. β€œWe shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.” Continue reading...
