I think the best way to stop Elon Musk is to make a donation to the Tesla and SpaceX strike fund so that all his workers can all go on strike for a month fully paid. He'd soon have to stop what he's doing

A cropped email from a recruitment professional offering data science candidates, the placeholders where the name of the targeted company and the recipient should be have not been filled in
Out of all the unsolicited messages offering recruitment services to me, this one is the most embarrassing
#HeathrowExpansion won’t deliver growth. Business demand is falling & more tourists leave than arrive. But it *will* trash climate commitments, drive more extreme weather, noise & air pollution & only benefit frequent flying super-emitters - the 15% who take 75% of flights. Labour should be better
Analysis: UK would need forest ‘twice size of London’ to offset new airport expansion | @joshgabbatiss.bsky.social @vernerviisas.carbonbrief.org

This is extremely funny
By me: why the UK Chancellor's justifications of how aviation expansion & climate protection can be combined don't stack up
Sustainable aviation fuel, electric planes and reduced circling above London are all either small impact or highly uncertain. Or both

I remember seeing a clip like this about the Boring Company where he was breathlessly explaining digging smaller holes as a solution to tunneling. It's frustrating that this guy is regarded as a genius just because people accept simple arithmetic like some grand revelation
I wish I'd have invested in this instead of Magna Roma! It looks awesome
My achievement for the day is getting XGBoost to run on Apple Silicon, despite not knowing what any of the terms or errors mean. Who needs GPU acceleration anyway
Easy. 0, 86400, 172800, 259200... I could go on

Together with The Alan Turing Institute, we're using generative AI to forecast cloud movements, enhancing our existing forecast model to enable solar to be more efficiently integrated into the UK electricity grid.
Indeed, I feel that way too!
My favourite column of the week
or infrastructure, and practically all I have is a good track record for delivering data projects, being knowledgeable and influencing people who don't know anything about data. Does it matter if I'm in the top 5% rather than the top 1% if I feel like I'm making a difference in my field or org?
I'm at serious risk of becoming a reply guy for you David 😂 I think my answer to this is "so what?". I've managed to get to my CTO role (which is part time anyway) without being a specialist in anything other than data management. I weigh in on the data and database design more than front end 1/2
I am so mad with Microsoft Authenticator. There are FOUR apps on my laptop and TWO on my phone that are constantly (and on different timescales) asking for verification. The one on my phone is a push notification, how is that 2F? This is exactly the kind of design that makes people switch off 2FA
This is the greatest Saturnalia present I could have ever wished for!
Big announcement at the beginning of this weeks episode for all you Revolutions podcast fans. sites.libsyn.com/47475/118-bl...

"Our results suggest that the hottest annual global temperature anomaly is very likely to be at least 1.97°C—and likely to be at least 2.11°C—even in the most ambitious decarbonization scenario" at least being the opposite of "peak"
Seems to be a massive misinterpretation of the original paper, which uses neural networks to predict peak warming under current net zero scenarios. The paper's conclusion supports the previous analysis that even under deep decarbonisation, warming of 3 degrees is likely (catastrophic)

We're looking to interviews people experienced in cyber security investment decision making (e.g. modellers, consultants, managers, CISOs). Could this be you? If so, please get in touch with our amazing CDT Cybersecurity PhD researcher, Zaina (details in the image, my DMs open as well for intros!)
Ahahaha, that is very good!
OK how about we workshop a better name that fits that category. First go: "Data Management, no one will do it except you (hopefully)"
A few years ago I was in a pub and there was an old copy of national geographic in it, from some time around 2005, with a two page advertising spread about Shell's wind power investment credentials. I wonder if we redirected all that fake advertising budget how much we could have done with it
I'm teaching data management at Masters level on Thursday, but this time I'm dispensing with the title "it's boring, but you should do it" as it potentially sends the wrong message at the beginning of a 4 hour session
I know, it's creepy
The AI face that all these characters have is rapidly giving me nightmares
A cautionary tale unfolded last week as Denmark failed to attract bids for offshore wind. What can we learn from this?
This is a multi-dimensional problem, but the primary lesson I believe is that Denmark wrongly expected developers to take on market risk. 🧵🔌💡1/9
