Fair enough. There's a lot of noise around the power grid specifically (which could be easily mitigated with proper investment in renewables which Alec has advocated for repeatedly). I just think the power is the tip of a very large iceberg people aren't prepared for between silicon and capex costs.

Looking at power alone is shortsighted. The entire system is the economic model, not the power. Silicon, land, & construction take up more than 90% of costs already. With the right investment in renewable energy, the power costs themselves become effectively the cheapest part of the entire equation.

Power consumption isn't the whole picture when it comes to overall economic efficiency and feasibility.

Keep in mind today's subscription costs are artificially subsidized, much like Netflix was in its infancy. Once they have you by the balls, they will tighten their grip and you'll be paying triple or more. This is the ultimate result of "growth at all costs" you lock into with centralized services.

Just because they are "worse" does not mean they can't perform adequately for everyday tasks. And economies of scale, while well understood, does not mean a centralized data center is better for the end user than a local model. Economically, running local will often be cheaper to the end user.

Yes. Go compare the energy costs for a single prompt of chat gpt or Geminics fastest models. Then go check how much power it takes for something like a fast qwen or Gemma model. It's lower per prompt for things like Gemma.

Not worse. The llm doesn't even have to be loaded when I'm not using it vs data centers being forced to support all the infrastructure all the time, even during lulls. Not to mention the massive upfront costs of construction and procurement vs using the device I already have.

My *phone* can run a reasonably effective local LLM if I want it to. It's actually wild to even think about just five years ago.

I will say you can get surprisingly efficient local AI models already, and this technology is still very much in its infancy. The idea that we need these giant data enters just to see the benefits of AI is bonkers to me.
