"In the 30 years since it opened, the stadium at the South Philly sports complex currently known as Xfinity Mobile Arena has had five names. That’s more than the number of championships the two teams who play there — the Flyers and 76ers — have in their combined 122 years in Philly."

I love how the second most popular opinion among woso fans, behind "we're pretty sure we like woso," is "there is absolutely no justification for DPRK being in the top 10."

Is Philadelphia Ready for the 2026 World Cup? | Jonathan Tannenwald Philadelphia is one of 11 U.S. host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with six matches scheduled at Lincoln Financial Field. But with just over two years until the tournament, how ready is the…

"Philadelphia is going to have a moment on the global stage like it's really never had before ... people might even like it, which is strange for people here to think."

Of course if you ask me what the logic is in having Egypt play in Seattle, Vancouver and Seattle, while Brazil is playing in NYNJ, Philadelphia and Miami, or Croatia are playing in Dallas, Toronto and then Philly, my answer would be 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I don't think FIFA particularly worries about catering to local diaspora when scheduling games, because they will inevitably travel to wherever their team is.

The scheduling has way more to do with broadcast time zones, travel distances and stadium capacities.

This reminds me of a story I always wanted to write if I had the opportunity to do so: going behind the scenes of the unlicensed scarf industry.

I wish the contacts I'd made with sellers at RWC2019 hadn't dried up but one day I will dust off that pitch!

I have long assumed that regardless of the political situation or the prices, there are still enough people who want to be (or be seen at) these games to fill up these stadiums.

But at this point I don't think we're going to know what these crowds will be until the games actually happen.

Anyone who follows baseball knows that Bat/ball boys have an often thankless job. The Phillies, however, made a hype video for theirs, and I LOVE IT.

Per FIFA, the Women's World Ranking Top 10 is finally free of the DPRK menace for now.

I remember when people figured out that he had a team of writers trawling Reddit and Facebook for memes/content to repost without credit, and I swear he only really started to go gray once that slowed down.

How Philadelphia's World Cup setup became the envy of fans in New York, Boston, and beyond From private financing to years of behind-the-scenes planning, here's an inside look at what Philadelphia has done right to get ready for its moment on the world stage.

From transit to tailgating to the fan fest, Philadelphia’s World Cup setup has become the envy of fans elsewhere — especially in New York and Boston.

How has the city they love to hate pulled it off?

A look behind the curtain:

“All we have to do to get the world to fawn over us for a solid five weeks is treat the massive influx of visitors decently and do the bare minimum to help them have a good experience? AND we can clown on New York and Boston while we do it? Sign me right the fuck up, go birds.”

Philly is going to win the World Cup because half the other host cities are tripping over themselves looking for rakes to step on.

Three more Japanese players getting chips overnight... Hiroki Ito's Bayern clinched the Bundesliga (the man himself put in a full shift) while Seiya Maikuma and Rion Ichihara were unused subs in AZ's 5-1 pasting of NEC (whose only goal came from Koki Ogawa) in the KNVB Cup final.

1. This is the 2018 reboot series, not the original 1983 anime (which is so deep in licensing hell that I'm not sure it will ever get a proper modern release).

2. DVDs? In the year of our lord 2026?

Okay, I'm actively looking for somewhere to 'host' this now. It goes without saying that Substack and WordPress are out... and I have tried Buttondown before, but it didn't play nicely with wordcount or Gmail subscribers... so what are the best alternatives for a simple, monthly newsletter?

yeah like I said it's kinda hard to find a context for all of these numbers.

I will say, though, that for a competition everyone complained is meaningless, the league is doing well to keep avg. attendance stable.

What I wouldn't give for an authentic - not "authentic" - northeast diner in Tokyo. Have come across a handful of facsimiles over the years but nothing comes close.

Seems late compared to previous seasons, which I think have been skewed by Celtic's Japanese bhoys winning the SPFL Cup in December or Endo winning the Carabao Cup in February.

Either way you are right, and Ito should beat the Japanese players on the KNVB Cup-winning side by about half an hour.
