The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

earlier this year I had my students read Diane Paul's (1987) The nine lives of discredited data (link in next post). It is disappointing, but not surprising, to see that the problem remains unresolved (maybe jumped from a discipline to another).

So the Justice Department admits in its own filings that the following groups are extremist groups. Can someone ask Patel and Blanche how aggressively DOJ/FBI are monitoring them, considering how dangerous they are? Are they screening gov employees for affiliations with these groups?

The Capital is Misaligned and the Crash is Coming My strong disagreement with the sentiment on Wall Street.

The lack of counter-argument (despite high engagement) to this piece is something one should consider in their priors when evaluating whether I might be right or not.

This pizza joint in Baltimore run by a delightful Afghani family; made their own tomato sauce from scratch that was the PERFECT consistency - hint of coriander and a memory of cardamom - and one pizza was just cheese but it was like seven kinds of cheese and one slice was three days of food

Hate is a choice, an easy choice. A bad choice. Love is a choice, a hard choice. A good choice.

I noted yesterday that we would do well to describe what role the actions Trump is performing, rather than assuming he is functioning as President.

Mostly, Trump is an old man retreating into his lifelong hobbies: construction, cons, and corruption. With lots of golf.

Ballerina (“a John Wick Story” or whatever) is good stuff. Hyper stylized action in a kinda niche universe that is expected but from a different angle that feels fresh yet comforting.

Motion/Action smoothing is an evil AF but especially for those movies I’ve watched like 1,000 times. It’s like my memories are being put through an instagram filters.

you could become a battlecry slung over the lawns

I'm saying the screaming doesn't have to stop only start sure, consequences that old chestnut but there's nothing stopping you not really no bind no gag only this little veneer of civility I know a gal that liked to scream on top of neolithic tombs I kid but you could sitting in you thorned and roiling for nothing here

just letting go into a sharp november wind

she could kill ya

her shriek the pitch to split a man's head like a pomelo

open up this shuttered chest

all your rage

carried like a weekend bag

your big stupid head carrying your big stupid neuroses

in bouquets like tulips

if it were up to me I'd do tours

into a field

this spot where you are now

let go

you know you blew it

Obviously the answer is mostly “drugs” but it really is kind of fascinating to me how Musk oscillates between “a post scarcity utopian future is at hand!” and “the mongrel races are coming to claim the persecuted white man’s scarce resources in a zero sum game!”
