Here's a sub 8 minute video featuring our @rantyhighwayman.bsky.social explaining just how easy it is to deal with vehicle crossings correctly.

This new bridge in downtown Helsinki is already my favorite spot in town.

You can have phone conversations, and hear people talking and kids laughing as they pass by.

The silence is astonishing, despite being so close to city centre.

Because there are no cars.

With that in mind, here's a rural Dutch bus stop on a main highway with a couple of nearby cycle parking spaces which extends the bus service reach.

It's #WorldPublicTransportDay and so worth remembering how walking, wheeling and cycling are part of the wider public transport solution.

Whether it is feeding public transport or taking some pressure off it, a rounded #SustainableMobility mix should be our ultimate aim.

Over 30 Years in the Making: The Continuous Cycle Route from Helmond to Eindhoven The continuous cycle route between Helmond and Eindhoven — the F270 — is nearly complete. I recently cycled and filmed the route as it is now. This route feels very close to home in more than one way. Back in 2008, when I first met my great aunt Jo in Australia, I spoke with her about this very corridor. Like most of my mother’s side of the family, she was from Helmond and had worked in Eindhoven.

I recently rode the nearly finished F270 between Helmond and Eindhoven — a route my family once cycled daily to work in the 1950s.
This route is finally taking shape as a continuous cycle route.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - this station is part of a wider public realm scheme and as one arrives, the glass front frames a sea view. We think it is great and fits the context of sitting in the North Sea sand dunes.

Hoek van Holland Strand station on the Rotterdam Metro B Line.

A new station opened in 2023 as part of the conversion of the line from a national route to part of the metro provides a direct route to the beach for city residents and tourists alike.

The Clacton to Jaywick path in Essex is a 1km link next to the sea providing a direct walking, wheeling and cycling between the village of Jaywick and the town of Clacton-on-Sea.

Smooth and lit, the link is 40% shorter, and 100% less scarier than the on-road alternative!

Streets designed for the benefit of the human and the inefficiency of the car leads to calm, safe environments where separated bike infrastructure is not necessary.

Indeed; most of this really isn't a space issue - the UK's problem is the dreaded "balanced for all road users" approach which inevitably means the most vulnerable make the most compromise.

A narrow street with two narrow footways in grey tile paving and a red block-paved carriageway which is wide enough for a refuse truck in one direction. There is car parking on one side of the street which swaps from the right to the left, book-ended by a pair of planters with trees to create a chicane.

People often say that the Dutch can cycle because their streets are wider than ours. In fact, most streets don't have cycle tracks. Here's Clercxstraat in Tilburg.

One-way for motors, and low traffic by network design allowing most people to walk in the carriageway. Pretty narrow!

Road Maintenance Ratings: Local Authority Map

Of course, we measure what we value and that's not where people move under their own steam (or with a little help) as we saw in the DfT Road Maintenance Ratings which were not that interesting in those not driving.

There isn't, however, reliable national information on footway and cycleway condition as well as data on other assets such as highway structures, drainage and lighting, so the picture will be far worse.

Cycling side-by-side isn’t bad behaviour—it’s human behaviour. It’s how parents talk to their kids. How friends catch up. How communities form.

If bicycle infrastructure is too narrow for people to ride and talk together, the problem isn’t the people. It’s the infrastructure.

Implementation will take several years. First steps in 2025 focused on signage and markings. More significant changes—like redesigning key streets and public spaces—are scheduled past 2026. The phased approach allows planners to test the concept, gather feedback, and refine the design as it evolves.

There are people cycling in the narrow carriageway and people walking on the pair of footway.

It's the March edition of #HighwaysMagazine where @rantyhighwayman.bsky.social cycles into the city to make the point that we need to improve our maintenance hierarchies.

We've done this thinking for one highway authority already and would love to work with more.

And yes, he spelt modal wrong 😅

If signals are required, a junction of that scale should be single stage crossings. That design exists because the existing road network is too busy (with motors) and plugging this development in needs signals so people driving out get a chance to do so and they are a higher priority locally.

Ringmead/ Cottesmore, Bracknell.

An old and perfectly serviceable example of a "cycle priority junction" (s10.4.11 of LTN 1/20).

Nothing is new in highways and there is plenty to rediscover!
