i think the first time i encountered the term 'butt rock' it was in ultra gameplayers about some sega racing game (sega rally, maybe? daytona usa 2?) and took it to mean really cheesy, packaged rock n' roll. (as opposed to the XTREME alt rock/pop punk that was in, say, top skater)
