She is exactly the kind of person you want in public service — thoughtful, experienced, and genuinely committed to the people she serves. Her tenure as California State Controller speaks for itself: years of steady, serious work on behalf of this state's finances and its residents. Suspending a campaign is never an easy decision. It takes a clear-eyed honesty that is, frankly, rarer than it should be in politics. When the numbers are not there, continuing can shift focus away from the issues that matter most to the people who need to hear them. Betty made the harder, more principled call. Her presence in this race shaped the conversation. The questions she raised, the standard she set, and the voters she engaged will continue to matter as California Democrats work to determine who carries their values and priorities into November.
