Nintendo controllers ARE shit, but if you didn't get your special controller approved, or even feigned ignorance and used it without letting organizers know, you're in the wrong 100%, no matter the reason. Just do things the right way. There's no reason to put yourself in that predicament.
I'm not damning people who used 3rd party. As I said, personal preference is none of my concern. The thing that brings it to discussion, however, is always legality in tournament play. People use the excuse of, "Well Nintendo controllers are shit" to make themselves seem right for breaking rules.
Perhaps I wasn't clear in what I was trying to convey on the topic, but when I say illegal to the tournament, that is strictly to controllers *NOT APPROVED* by said tournament organizers. If you bring in a controller and they approve it, it's a legal controller. If it's not approved, illegal.
I understand the point you're trying to address, but I dont believe disability was the intended idea around this post. That is a whole different ball park of questioning. Either way, it needs to be approved by the one's organizing the event.
If you can't play by the rules, just don't play. It's as simple as that. You can't break the rules given and be right because you decide it. That's not how it works.
The issue here is knowingly bringing it into a tournament that has rules put in place to be FAIR. Anything that gives you an upper hand that is outside of the rules is very obviously illegal because it now places you outside what is fair. It doesn't matter how minute the change.
If you need a different controller than someone else to play better, you're already showing a difference in skill. Am I saying Nintendo controllers are perfectly optimized? No. They're not great, and everyone knows that. If you want to use a better control for personal play, by all means.
The short answer is, absolutely fucking yes.
The point of rules against 3rd party and modded controllers is that EVERYONE IS ON AN EQUAL LEVEL. The argument that "it's only slightly advantageous" is just an excuse for people to get their way of having an upper hand.
