Narrative-Integrated Thematic Analysis (NITA): How can LLMs support theme generation without coding? Large language models (LLMs) have sparked debate about shifting away from the coding paradigm; yet many applications have focused on replacing human coding rather than facilitating transitions to a...

Our piece proposes NITA, a non-coding approach to thematic analysis with GenAI/LLMs. While NITA might not be appealing or applicable to all qualitative researchers, it could be beneficial for those working in applied research www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Thanks for this Trish. I read and enjoyed your short piece. In some ways your claims resemble what we (Friese, me, Powell and Morgan) wrote in 'Beyond binary position...'. We will be able to share this once it is available.

Documenting debates on GenAI in (reflexive) qualitative research <p><span>This document, as its title indicates, aims to document objectively what happened on the topic of generative AI (genAI) and qualitative research on soc

Interested in recent debates sparked by the open letter and commentary by Jowsey et al. that rejects GenAI in reflexive qualitative research? I’ve documented almost everything you need to know to follow these debates here bit.ly/3WYiQuu

In #qualitativeresearch, many try to quantify findings or imagine them as a single event—a moment of epiphany, a clear-cut boundary between question and answer. In reality, a conceptual leap is not a sudden moment. It’s an accumulative, iterative, flexible process. Check out this brilliant article

ChatGPT in thematic analysis: Can AI become a research assistant in qualitative research? - Quality & Quantity Despite an emerging body of scholarship on applying generative AI (GenAI) to qualitative data analysis, this area remains underdeveloped. This article evaluates how GenAI can support thematic analysis using a publicly available interview dataset from Lumivero. It introduces Guided AI Thematic Analysis (GAITA), an adaptation of King et al.’s (2018) Template Analysis. This framework positions researchers as a reflexive instrument and intellectual leader while thoroughly guiding GPT-4 in four stages: data familiarization; preliminary coding; template formation and finalization; and theme development. Additionally, the article proposes the ACTOR framework, a simple approach to combining different effective prompting techniques when working with GenAI for qualitative research purposes. Findings reveal GenAI’s capacity for analyzing the data, generating codes, subcodes, clusters, and themes, along with its adaptive learning and interactive assistance in organizing unstructured data and developing trustworthiness. However, this model has some key limitations in terms of its restricted context window for processing large datasets, its inconsistent outputs requiring multiple prompt attempts, the need to move across workspaces, and the lack of relevant training data for qualitative research purposes.

How have you navigated the ups and downs to become a #qualitative researcher?
For me, a Global South scholar, it’s meant seizing every opportunity to learn from mentors, connect with participants, read methodological literature, stay active in publishing, and write authentically.

Thanks for sharing those details. It does not surprise me. In my experiment with theme development, GenAI could only generate descriptive rather interpretative themes.

Our paper follows recent attempts such as Morgan (2025), Friese (2025), Hayes (2025) in applying #conversational methods to develop themes, skipping coding. These attempts imply the potential of #GenAI in facilitating a #paradigm shift in approaching to #qualitative data analysis.
