Strong work on number in Reception matters but early maths is broader. Shape, space, measure and spatial reasoning need the same focus.

Tens frames show composition.
Bar models show relationships.

There’s been strong focus on number in EYFS, and rightly so.
But maths is more than number.
Children need rich, sequenced experiences of shape, space and measure. I’ve been developing a spatial reasoning programme - more soon.

One idea explored in the book is faded examples.
We don’t go from model → independent in one jump.
We gradually remove steps.
Support fades. Thinking grows.

Extend the number line: left/right, positive/negative.
Now cross two lines. That’s a coordinate grid.
Not new maths, just structure combined.
Secure structure first. Then context.

“You can’t do that.”
But, of course, you can: 7 − 9 = –2
The issue is structure. If subtraction is only “take away”, it breaks.
See it as difference on a number line and it works - past zero.

Some count on. It works—but it’s inefficient.
Fluency comes from structure:
5 = 3 + 2
So: 7 + 5 → 7 + 3 + 2 → 10 + 2 = 12
Not a trick. Better thinking.
Bridging 10 frees up attention for deeper maths.
