Strong work on number in Reception matters but early maths is broader. Shape, space, measure and spatial reasoning need the same focus.

Tens frames show composition.
Bar models show relationships.

Thereโs been strong focus on number in EYFS, and rightly so.
But maths is more than number.
Children need rich, sequenced experiences of shape, space and measure. Iโve been developing a spatial reasoning programme - more soon.

We donโt go from model โ independent in one jump.
We gradually remove steps.

Now cross two lines. Thatโs a coordinate grid.
Not new maths, just structure combined.

The issue is structure. If subtraction is only โtake awayโ, it breaks.
See it as difference on a number line and it works - past zero.

Some count on. It worksโbut itโs inefficient.
Fluency comes from structure:
5 = 3 + 2
So: 7 + 5 โ 7 + 3 + 2 โ 10 + 2 = 12
Not a trick. Better thinking.
Bridging 10 frees up attention for deeper maths.
