Looks like routine questions. Look again.

This is procedural variation.
Not random. Each example highlights what stays the same and what changes.

Thatโ€™s how pupils see patterns and structure.

Depth isnโ€™t doing more - it's seeing more.

Great to see this out in the wild ๐Ÿ

Really pleased to be working with @TrilbyTV again to bring mathematical thinking onto screens across schools.

If it starts a conversation, itโ€™s doing its job.

Big thanks to the team for - excited to see it in classrooms across the UK.

Strong work on number in Reception matters but early maths is broader. Shape, space, measure and spatial reasoning need the same focus.

Iโ€™ve been developing a sequenced programme to help children notice, reason and explain.

More soon. ๐Ÿ

Representations arenโ€™t to do the maths, they help pupils see it.
Tens frames show composition.
Bar models show relationships.
Number lines show magnitude.

For all learners.

Seeing structure builds real understanding.

Thereโ€™s been strong focus on number in EYFS, and rightly so.

But maths is more than number.

Children need rich, sequenced experiences of shape, space and measure. Iโ€™ve been developing a spatial reasoning programme - more soon.

One idea explored in the book is faded examples.

We donโ€™t go from model โ†’ independent in one jump.

We gradually remove steps.
Support fades. Thinking grows.

Not less help - better timed help.

Zero isnโ€™t the edge. Itโ€™s the centre.

Extend the number line: left/right, positive/negative.

Now cross two lines. Thatโ€™s a coordinate grid.

Not new maths, just structure combined.

Secure structure first. Then context.

7 โˆ’ 9
โ€œYou canโ€™t do that.โ€

But, of course, you can: 7 โˆ’ 9 = โ€“2

The issue is structure. If subtraction is only โ€œtake awayโ€, it breaks.

See it as difference on a number line and it works - past zero.

โ€œGreater depthโ€ isnโ€™t harder maths for a few.

Itโ€™s deep understanding for all.
In Teaching Maths for Mastery, I focus on structure, not speed - giving every pupil access to the thinking behind maths.

Thatโ€™s equity.

A proud moment.

My work is now being shown on digital signage in schools across the UK via TrilbyTV

Short animations from the curriculum, bringing key maths ideas to life - not just on paper, but on screens across school communities.

A small idea, shared widely.

7 + 5

Some count on. It worksโ€”but itโ€™s inefficient.

Fluency comes from structure:
5 = 3 + 2

So: 7 + 5 โ†’ 7 + 3 + 2 โ†’ 10 + 2 = 12

Not a trick. Better thinking.

Bridging 10 frees up attention for deeper maths.
