Beta NYC Civic Innovator award for the CUNY Mapping Service.

Honored for our @thegraduatecenter.bsky.social mapping team to have received a Civic Innovator award tonight from @beta.nyc. Beta NYC has been leading and defining civic innovation for years, so the award means a lot.

Lesson in resilience: Today I saw a spider smacking a yellow jacket that was trying to steal a lantern fly carcass from the web. Ultimately the spider retreated to the corner. We thought it was over but later found that the spider maneuvered the lantern fly closer to the corner. No sign of the wasp.

Spend a good chunk of today transplanting some overgrown hydroponic tomatoes and peppers to an outdoor container. Felt really proud then saw the severe thunderstorm notice. There could be hail and 60mph gusts. At least they are somewhat protected behind the balcony. Also Manhattan just disappeared.

I missed my stop after teaching a night class tonight and had to walk a few blocks along the tree lined island on Eastern Parkway. As I walked along admiring the budding honey locust branches against the night sky, I noticed dozens of new trees where there used to be empty pits. Made me happy.

I was working with identity folks at IDESG to address the Obama NSTIC strategy. We lost most of our funding in 2017. We had just enough to wrap it up. Afterward, the NSTIC website changed completely from focusing on privacy and security throughout the identity ecosystem to a focus on user distrust.

We should make a new website. For every web page that is deleted or changed we should be posting links to the wayback machine version.

Archivists Work to Identify and Save the Thousands of Datasets Disappearing From Data.gov More than 2,000 datasets have disappeared from data.gov since Trump was inaugurated. But analyzing exactly what happened and where it went is going to take some time.

Datasets are being deleted.

The digital infrastructure of the United States Government is both critical and fragile. Many of us who work in digital government have been trying to figure out what’s going on as norms and protocols are being subverted — Thread on some of what we know so far:

During 45 I relied a lot on the archive.org wayback machine for access to content the administration cut off or changed. They changed a lot of it. The truth is in the historical record if you know where to look.

They have these things at Michael’s craft stores for different types of materials. I’d also look at die cutting tools art supply stores. Or even laser cutting (look for maker labs in your area) if you want to do a lot at once.

Took my CUNY students to see the eclipse. We made camera obscuras to project the moon on the wall, then went to the Adams Street median to look at tree shadows. Some nice NYU students lent us their glasses. At the half way point a woman rode by in a bike passing out a bunch of glasses. #eclipse2024
