my favorite post of the year so far
Alone Time.
Red Note is genuinely a blast, the cross-cultural exchange going on is one of the most wholesome things I’ve seen in years
The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this
People outside of LA truly don’t understand how apocalyptic this is. It’s worse than it’s ever been. Entire residential neighborhoods are burning to the ground.
While you are most exposed outdoors, wildfire smoke can seep indoors in cracks through windows and doors. It's a good idea to keep your HEPA purifiers running on high throughout the day, and wearing a N95 mask indoors too during the worst periods of smoke.
Hurst Fire (formerly Sylmar Fire), California
Fire has already doubled in size to 100 acres and jumped the 210 Freeway.
CAL FIRE, "Immediate threat to life. LEAVE NOW. North of 210 Freeway from Roxford to the Interstate 5/14 split."
Winds are 30 to 50 MPH with 20% to 25% humidity per NWS.
80-105 mph gusts during the night around Los Angeles. A fire hurricane. Devastating.
If you're in an evacuation zone in SoCal, please check in with any disabled/aging neighbors you have to see if they need help evacuating.
I am almost certainly gay
Pro tip from someone who used to cover fires all the time: N95s and KN95s (and other masks) will protect against the particulate matter that will otherwise potentially get into your throat, lungs, and bloodstream and make you feel like total shit.
Scoop: I obtained a confidential presentation outlining how a major conservative think tanks plans to go after volunteer editors on Wikipedia who it says are "abusing their position" and promoting antisemitism

Sharing here a long thread I just shared on Threads about Zuckerberg. Yes, I encouraged folks to come to Bluesky. Anyway, pull up a chair.
This may be the longest night in the history of Los Angeles. The devastation is going to be breathtaking
#BREAKING: Evacuation orders have expanded into Pasadena due to the Eaton Fire, which has grown to about 400 acres. abc7.la/3DLiGjH
Reminder: High quality masks like N95s will protect you from dangerous wildfire smoke, which can cause series short and long-term health problems. Stay safe, Los Angeles!
If your area gets evacuation order late at night & you’re safely able, bang on neighbors’ doors & make sure they’re awake & aware; check on neighbors who are housebound, elderly, disabled, etc. or have no car & may not be able to self-evacuate. You can save a life! #PalisadesFire
@meiselasb.bsky.social @bmeiselas.bsky.social Gents, please use your platform to reach the #MeidasMighty in Southern California. Everyone should download and monitor the app Watch Duty. It’s a phenomenal early warning and monitoring tool. Next 48 hours are critical. #PalisadesFire #EatonFire

At the Getty Villa, some trees & vegetation on site have burned, but no structures are on fire, and staff and the collection remain safe.

The image consists of two parts: a tweet from the official City of Santa Monica Twitter account and a corresponding evacuation map. Left Side (Tweet): • Header: The top of the tweet shows the profile picture and Twitter handle “@santamonicacity,” with a small circular icon of a wave on an orange background. • Text: “City of Santa Monica is issuing an Evacuation Order for all areas of the city north of San Vicente. Evacuation Order: Immediate threat to life. This is a lawful order to LEAVE NOW. The area is closed to public access.” Below the text is a link for updates: “santamonica.gov.” • Footer: Timestamp shows “7:38 PM, 1/7/25” with “290K Views” indicating the popularity of the tweet. Right Side (Evacuation Map): • Map Features: A street map highlighting a large portion of Santa Monica. • Evacuation Zones: • Red Zone (Evacuation Order): The northern section of the map is marked in red, indicating a mandatory evacuation zone labeled “Evacuation order.” • Yellow Zone (Evacuation Warning): An adjacent area south of the red zone is highlighted in yellow, labeled “Evacuation warning,” suggesting a lower-level advisory for residents to prepare for potential evacuation. • Key Landmarks: • San Vicente Boulevard marks the southern boundary of the red zone. • Roads such as Amalfi Drive and Montana Avenue are visible. • Points of interest include the Brentwood Country Club to the east and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) near Rogers Beach to the west. This map visually reinforces the evacuation directive, dividing affected areas into immediate and cautionary zones.
Please stay safe!
