Okay, we've had a few months to mourn the Trump election. It's time to look in the mirror. America hated the candidate we fielded so badly that she lost to a literal felon. On that front WE failed the assignment. A strategy of "do the same but HARDER" isn't going to move the needle.

I don't like analyzing the books I read too much. For me, it has a way of pulling me out of the experience. #booksky

I don't understand people who only read one genre. It's like looking at all the varieties of fruit in the world and deciding you only ever want to eat blueberries. I mean, blueberries are great and all, but doesn't it get a bit old after awhile? #booksky

"She was immediately wary. There was nothing quite so suspicious as the Manifestation of All Evil wanting to forge a contract with you." I feel like this should be a more common sentiment. #booksky

Ever wondered what Winnie the Pooh plus Alice in Wonderland would look like? I have a middle grade fiction book dropping in a few days that's exactly that. Check it out: #booksky www.jamesupsilonbooks.com/post/introdu...

Can a book be about love without a strong romance component? I think so. #booksky

Just finished Alloy of Law (Mistborn 4). I have to wonder: How is it possible for Wax to do all this sleuthing, sharpshooting, evasive maneuvers, etc. on no sleep? The last third of the book is a straight shot of about two days, and the book implies a sleepless the night before that as well. πŸ’™πŸ“š

Exactly! It takes a lot more work, but it's worth it on so many levels. Bluesky has been a lot better on that front, at least so far, and I don't want to see that changing.

Why Authors Should Build Community As I've been preparing to launch my debut novel (a middle grade book pumped full of as much craziness as I can fit in it), I've gone through my paces to learn the book marketing world. In so doing, I'...

I've noticed(to my untrained eye), an uptick in the number of authors/editors/cover self-promoting on #booksky lately.

Here's why I don't think that's a good thing for anyone, and how we can do better:

Third Earth in the Pendragon series. You could make an argument for Scythe by Neil Shusterman. Those are the main examples I can think of. It's not as common as it ought to be, I think.

I think dystopian books have a place, but I prefer ones that give us a vision of what this world can be if we all do our best with it. #booksky

Does anyone on here read middle grade fiction as adults? It's kind of nice to go for something light and funny sometimes, you know? πŸ’™πŸ“š

I always thought of myself as a one writing project at a time sort of person, but here I am with four separate books (all in different genres) at various levels of completion. #booksky #writingcommunity

So apparently there's evidence of the Indonesian government bombing civilians and people armed with literal bows and arrows in West Papua. Anyone else heard of this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=65_D...

Let's say we actually develop a technology that previous writers have fantasized about. Does that mean their work isn't science fiction anymore? #booksky

I enjoy books where the MC and antagonist have a lot more interaction than just trying to punch each other's lights out. #booksky

Have you found success doing that, or do you think it has hindered your sales?

Exactly!

I wouldn't go so far as to say "should" because I do think for some people it's worth it to adapt a little to make writing a sustainable source of income, but for me I've decided that it's most important to have a product I can stand behind, even if that means I can't go full time.

There's no way I'm not going to end up writing in an extremely wide variety of genres. I know that's not ideal from a branding perspective, but if I don't write what's interesting to me my books will be lackluster and I think that's worse. #writingcommunity πŸ’™πŸ“š
