What Happened to First Night? Every New Year’s Eve, my friend and I wish we had a First Night celebration to go to. We both went to many First Nights in our youth and wish such a thing were happening here in NYC. The way First Night worked was that you’d buy a button that gave you entry to an abundance of arts events, all packed together in a night of performances, leading to a finale of fireworks.

Okay, you got me, I wrote this four months ago. I thought about sitting on it another eight months so it would be timely again but...it's not so much about the date as it is the art.

A yellow backdrop of a map of the USA, with pink/red spots on it to indicate active #MMIW cases. Green, red and purple curtains are on each side of it. The cast, listed left to right in the post above, wears traditional red ribbon skirts and shawls as they face the audience/house. (Rehearsal photo)

Congrats to this cast! So excited that the extraordinary, brilliant cast of FOUR WOMEN IN RED has just been nominated for Best Ensemble for the 31st NAACP Theater Awards in June! Congrats to (left to right): Harriette Feliz, Carolyn Dunn, Jehnean Washington, and Zoey Reyes! ❤️

Twentynine Palms: LAT "best of year", praised by Hunter Thompson, turns 25. Here's launch on BookTV. I talk about why I wrote it ("felt like I was struck by lightning") & why it took 10 years ("I move slow, like the desert, where it takes place"). @booksky.bsky.social

They want to ban books because books allow us to live many different lives in so many different ways, and the more we do that, the less susceptible we become to their lies and propaganda. Read so that you become ungovernable. Read so that you keep hold of your humanity.
