Need a freelance editor?

I'm lucky enough to be busy with reporting work but I'd love to take on more editing if any games/tech outlets need it. I've spent about half of my career as an editor, including at BBC News, on everything from breaking news to long-read investigations

"Tamagotchi on steroids" - how one "groundbreaking" video game from the 90s paved the way for the AI of Google DeepMind, Gemini and beyond Peter Molyneux, Google DeepMind's Richard Evans, and more on the making and legacy of Black & White as it turns 25.

A reported feature I've long wanted to write:

For @eurogamer.bsky.social, I draw a direct line from Black & White's creature AI to the world-transforming ambitions of Google DeepMind, with the inside scoop on Lionhead's starry-eyed, stoner culture of the time.

Fortnite's future is shakier than it has ever been The news of 1,000 layoffs is far from fatal for Fortnite's, but the future is uncertain.

I wrote about Fortnite's precarious future for @pcgamer.com: Devs are being told to drive "engagement" with fewer resources, just as fan goodwill leaks away.

If you're an Epic dev, DMs open or I'm sphorti@gmail.com (use non-work device/email). Shares appreciated!

I think I genuinely forgot to announce that I've been the Gaming Editor of the UK's biggest technology website for more than seven months now.

Why is gaming becoming so expensive? The answer is found in AI We are paying more for a PlayStation so that idiots can use ChatGPT to mislead people on dating apps – something is rotten in the state of gaming

This week's newsletter: PlayStation price rises aren't about Sony’s greed. It’s an indication of the rot at the heart of big tech, which has become a closed economic system predicated on making things worse for most of us so that a very few can make billions.

"Bungie's first game in nine years has reminded me what it means for a studio to have a 'house style'. I'm not just talking about an eye for world building, gorgeous environments and skyboxes, or a dense codex that inspires main menu idling—I'm talking raw first-person shooting excellence."

Ah fair. I guess I'll work that out when I finally get near the centre of the map!

Yeah that's fair. Especially in first 10 hours, you need something to pull you around the maps

Really interesting counterpoint to Marathon praise from @brendyc.bsky.social. Agree or not, it's worth reading!

4 weeks ago 0 0 0 0

My issue with Marathon's quests is that unlike Arc they're mandatory for progress (unlock perks, upgraded gear) AND they're really fiddly at times, asking you to reach three points on the map (hard if you're playing in a team of randos).

Still loving Marathon, though! The shooting is electric

How many runs did it take you to feel confident in the map? I've had a couple of losing runs and just feel like I'm chucking away 5K each time...

Crimson Desert blends whoop-inducing bombast with brain-smoothing banality — like a prestige take on Candy Crush.

I've never played a game that has felt more hard-wired for the attention economy: every frame, menu, and interaction seems to radiate this commercial ideology.

Marathon’s Time To Kill Is Unforgiving, Unfair, and Utterly Brilliant - IGN Marathon's short time-to-kill can feel unfair, but quick deaths are all part of its delicately balanced risk vs. reward loop.

I'm praising Marathon (again) for IGN, this time specifically for the speed you can drop enemies. I used to think the time to kill was too low, but now I think it's genius. Have a read! www.ign.com/articles/mar...

Marathon’s Absurd Pickpocketing Drone Shows How Bungie Is Doing Extraction Shooters Differently - IGN Marathon's brilliantly bizarre Thief class shows how Bungie is putting a mischievous new spin on extraction shooters.

Can't get enough of Marathon's Thief class. A drone for recon, grapple for mobility, and x-ray specs that tell you where good loot is (so you can ignore low-level chests). Plus a pickpocketing drone is just so dastardly.

Wrote about the class for IGN earlier this week:

Marathon is a stylishly merciless video game built for cut-throat times A lot is riding on the success of the latest multiplayer online shooter from Halo creator Bungie, a DayGlo spectacular that whisks players to a far-off planet mired in an endless battle for resources

Marathon is brutal and ruthless — the perfect game for these cut-throat, perniciously cynical times. I wrote up my impressions for @theguardian.com.

Haven't mentioned yet that I wrote the cover feature for the current issue of Edge. Pick up a copy while it's still on sale!

Did you know that No Law is a proper immersive sim, in the style of Deus Ex and Dishonored? I flew to Sweden in January so that you could read all about it.
