A Ganbare Goemon collection was announced in today's Nintendo Direct!
It consists of all the Famicom, Super Famicom and Game Boy games.
It'll come out on July to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the series!

This is a recomp, not decomp. It's completely stable and will offer HD resolutions at 60fps with additional graphics settings so will provide a more modern experience than the original.
There's a new release of the "Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon" recomp project which now features mods support.
For example, you can now enable Japanese cutscene voices in the American version.

Kamakura Gongorō Kagemasa in the kabuki play Shibaraku. Notice how the face make-up is the same, the side of the hair looking like exhaust pipes just like the one on the back of Kashiwagi, and the sleeves which are just like Kashiwagi's wings.

Kashiwagi, the first Impact boss encountered in MNSG is based upon Kamakura Gongorō Kagemasa, a samurai who lived in the Heian period. But more specifically, Kashiwagi takes inspiration from the Shibaraku (a kabuki play) portrayal of Kamakura Gongorō.

Proton Experimental appears to work for some people. You can also create a shortcut in desktop mode, then add it as a 3rd party shortcut in Gamemode.
That said, Goemon International does not maintain the recomp so asking on the github for support is your best bet.
