It would really help if you contacted your Member of Congress RIGHT NOW and told them not to extend 702 without a warrant requirement. 202-224-3121 or click here: act.eff.org/action/congr...

EFF urges Congress to “do the hard & responsible thing & come to the table to put in real protections for Americans,” EFF’s @irmck.bsky.social told @theguardian.com. “By just doing a straight-up clean extension, you’re abdicating your responsibility to the people that you are elected to represent.”
Your representative needs to hear from you right now, before the April 20 deadline. Contact them today.
Tell them: No vote on any bills that would reauthorize Section 702 without meaningful reform.
As I say in the piece below, this is the wrong question. While it's certainly politically popular to talk about protecting children, it misses what we actually need: a comprehensive consumer privacy bill that restricts data collection for all users and bans behavioral advertising.
Just finished watching the space shuttle launch, and I found myself feeling surprisingly emotional. Happy Space Day!
So...can we use this precedent to strike down abortion related laws where the providers *must* first provide "counsel" to the patient that may or may not be medically accurate?
And to be clear - I do blame the elected officials, but I also blame the voters who elected them to do this and who are encouraging this. This doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
Running a government is actually really complicated. But not even pretending to do the absolute rock bottom bare minimum? 🤮
House Republicans rejecting the Senate’s deal to reopen most of DHS out of hand without an alternate plan is just so profoundly irresponsible.
Congratulations and welcome!
oh hey I know her
Always fun when EFF gets the last word (even if I sound a bit like a pretentious philosophy major - I promise that I did not major in philosophy): www.spglobal.com/market-intel...
When I am made God Emperor, I plan to make sure the design people who decided you only get half a door to the shower area are added to the pile.
Also, it's always a fun day at work when EFF litigators get feisty.
We sometimes joke that Congress/ the companies do weird or shady stuff to see if we are awake and paying attention. Turns out, we are.

I am calling on @icegov.bsky.social Director Todd Lyons to immediately confirm or deny the existence of a “domestic terrorist” database. If true, you’re violating the Constitution. If not, maybe talk to your “border czar” to get your stories straight. This isn’t a game–it’s the Constitution.
LISTEN: Those “year-in-review” insights from your apps might seem fun to see and share, but they’re a symptom of the surveillance culture that permeates the internet and threatens your privacy, EFF’s @irmck.bsky.social told @KCBSRadio.bsky.social.

It's Giving Tuesday, and thus, I ask for your support. EFF is actually grassroots funded, which is awesome, because that means I get to lobby on behalf of internet users, not internet companies. It's one of the reasons this job is the best. But we do still need money to do stuff, like go to DC.
Just wanted to say this a little louder before I go to bed tonight - there's a lot EFF can do to represent internet users, but when people take the time to also speak for themselves, our message hits a little differently. Keep sending those emails!
Emailing works too, but you have to take the step of finding the website and clicking some buttons. It’s different for all of them, and I can’t send you to just one website.
Point is: Pick your pain point, and do the thing.
(Telling the internet doesn’t count. Call).
Periodic reminder - if Congress is about to vote on a bill, and you have an opinion about that bill, you should tell your elected peeps directly. Most of us have 3 (sorry, DC), and they don’t coordinate, so you have to tell all 3 yourself.
Call this, and ask to be connected:

Shameless self promotion: Right now in a minute, I’m speaking on Section 230’s misunderstood legacy at #FutureOfSpeech 2025, hosted by @cdt.org & @StandTogether.
I'm newly back from sabbatical, so I'm rested and extra feisty. Join us!

Shutdowns are always dumb. This one, from the outside, appears to be more dumb than usual.
Math problems are entirely the Speaker’s problem. Full stop.
But if the Republicans don’t negotiate with those Democrats to write a bill that any Democrat actually wants to vote for, the majority has a math problem.
Now, there is a non-insignificant part of the majority party who just hates spending bills and will vote No on anything that requires the government to do its job, so the Republicans have had to rely on some conservative Democrats to get things done.
Caveat: I’m on sabbatical for a bit, so I’m not in the weeds at all on the current political situation. However, when one party has unified control of DC, it is absolutely bonkers to blame a shutdown on the minority.
