The cover of Tim Parfitt’s novel The Madrid Connection, showing Caravaggio’s David and Goliath

If you’re planning a trip to the Spanish capital, I recommend The Madrid Connection by Tim Parfitt, involving a theft from the Prado, football corruption, gruesome deaths and a lot of whizzing around the city on bikes @tripfiction.bsky.social

But… you are smiling - albeit wryly I suppose, which seems absolutely right to me. People are weird! 🤷‍♀️

Next week authorities will clear several sites in Ibiza where migrants, mostly from Saharan Africa, live in tents and shacks. These people work in hospitality and construction to support the tourist industry.

Lovely footage of the first bear born in Aragon in more than 50 years, shortly after emerging from hibernation. Part of the slow recovery of brown bears in the Pyrenees. Via Aragón TV.

Fantastic that three Spanish films, including Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas, have been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in Cannes.

I also have quite a collection of Seasalt bands! Would also recommend the Good Wash Day hairband, not cheap but lovely soft organic jersey and nice colours. Not as wide as the Seasalt ones but with an elasticated bit at the back.

Historical hottie du jour: a monk, painted by El Greco in 1610. This man was so wasted in a career involving celibacy. Terrible. One must hope that he didn’t take his vows too seriously!

Conversation on a Sussex bus:

Young woman: Look at that lamb

Young man: What’s a lamb

Young woman: It’s a baby sheep

Young man: That’s what lamb is?
