The Racket cover

The Racket cover

Absolutely LOVING The Racket by @conorniland.bsky.social, a former pro-tennis player who was Ireland's No.1 for years. Grinding it out for years on the lower echelons of the tennis circuit for a chance to MAYBE one day play in a Grand Slam (which he did!) sounds remarkably like the comedy circuit.

‘Writing a book is tough but being a pro is harder’: Conor Niland on tennis’s periphery and reframing success Author of William Hill award-winning book The Racket does not miss life on tour as world No 129 but holds no bitterness towards the game

Thanks @conorniland.bsky.social for our interview about The Racket, which deservedly won the William Hill Sports Book of the year, co-written by @gcooney93.bsky.social. A pleasure talking about writing, playing at Wimbledon & the melancholia of the Challenger Tour

'If you’re reading it as a study in failure you’re not realising how much success you need to play in the biggest tournaments … it’s how you define failure.'

Johnny Watterson: Conor Niland’s The Racket is a seminal book in the sports genre Like Paul Kimmage’s A Rough Ride, both books speak of the journey to attain goals ultimately out of reach
