I just pre-ordered the book “Defying Tyrants: Following Jesus in a World of Christian Antichrists” by Matthew D. Taylor (visiting religious scholar-the Center on Faith & Justice at Georgetown). @matthewdtaylor.bsky.social More info here: www.broadleafbooks.com/store/author... Should be interesting!
I'll get into the racial dynamics in the next post in the series. To preview: I think the "white Christian nationalism" label works well with the hardline Catholics and Reconstructionists, but I think the Independent Charismatics are something else -- more multiethnic, more transnational.
It's a good question. Christian Identity (note the capital I -- not to be confused with people who identify as Christian) is an undergirding ideology/theology of American white supremacy. It has roots in Pentecostal-charismatic theologies, but most charismatics today have no real connection to it.
Many evangelicals outside of these camps have become quite radicalized and profoundly support Trump. Graham, for his symbolic connection to his father, is an important bit player in that. But he’s not neatly in any of these camps.
In some ways, because those institutions largely cater to evangelicals and are broadly Christian Zionist, they tend to align with –– and play along with –– the Independent Charismatics (i.e., Paula White-Cain and the White House Faith Office) for now.
That’s a good question. I’m planning to to this some in the next post, but I don’t view legacy religious right figures like Franklin Graham as part of a unified Christian supremacist ideology or movement. I’d also put the legacy religious right institutions a bit outside of that frame.
Most people use "Christian nationalism" as a catch-all, as if there was one united movement aiming for Christian power.
But there are actually 3 distinct movements competing for power in Trump's America — with different theologies, different strategies, and real tensions between them.
My latest.
... and we also talk about recovering Jesus's profoundly anti-authoritarian way.
Part 2 coming in just a few days. Don't miss it!

Listening to "The Violent Take It By Force" by @matthewdtaylor.bsky.social . Prepare to hear more about this from me in my upcoming episode of "These Troubled Times," where I'll be connecting the dots between the John Knox & the Scottish Reformation and January 6th. www.audible.com/pd/B0DGZLGN9...
An extremely important read. One of the best and critical reads so far in 2026. I’m late in reading this but nonetheless it is necessary to be educated and to think how we identify it when we see/hear it. Thank you @matthewdtaylor.bsky.social for your extensive research and work.
The ones who ARE a threat are currently in the cabinet, in Congress, and running your local school board.
Knowing the difference matters. A lot. New post 👇

Hot take that isn't actually a hot take if you study this stuff:
Not every Christian nationalist is a threat to democracy. Some of them are your aunt who likes "God Bless the USA" and has a flag in her church chancel.
BUT...
My Christian brothers and sisters, we gotta go get our boy.
The game is played from the inside. Do not let rhetoric betray the heart of God.
Airs Sunday, March 22 at 8pm ET — assuming the news gods cooperate. It's already been bumped twice (blizzard, then the war in Iran), so I'm cautiously optimistic.

As someone who studies Christian nationalism and theologies of Christian extremism, I think this is a really important story, and Pamela Brown and her team did serious, consequential work here.
I was interviewed for @cnn.com's upcoming documentary "The Rise of Christian Nationalism," part of The Whole Story with Pamela Brown.
It examines how extreme ideas & leaders have moved from the margins of evangelical culture into real political power — reshaping homes, schools, and government.
