Last semester, I reimagined Introduction to Film by integrating hands-on production into a large lecture course.
The result:
• 39 original films
• The launch of the Scenes of Us Student Film Festival at UVA

Bugün ihtiyacımız olan şey daha fazla nefret değil; daha fazla dayanışma, silah kanunları, okullarda ruh sağlığı desteği ve toplumumuzda ve medyada travmayı anlayan bir yaklaşım.
Araştırmalar, ağır suçlarla ilişkilendirilen kişilerin ailelerinde damga, utanç, sosyal izolasyon ve görünmez yas yaşandığını gösteriyor.
Bir başka önemli nokta da şu:
Saldırıyı yapan çocuğun ailesini linç etmek doğru değil.
Kamuoyu önünde toptan suçlama; zaten çocuklarını kaybetmiş, büyük bir üzüntü, utanç, korku ve travmayla baş etmeye çalışan aileleri daha da yalnızlaştırır.
Bu olaylar sadece doğrudan mağdurları değil, bütün toplumu etkiliyor.
Araştırmalar, okul saldırılarından sonra ruh sağlığı sorunlarının arttığını ve etkilerin yıllarca sürebildiğini gösteriyor.
Bu yüzden hayatta kalan öğrencilere, öğretmenlere ve ailelere uzun süreli psikososyal destek şart.
Evet, şiddet içeren içerikler üzerine tartışmalar var.
Ama kanıt, "oyun oynadı, bu yüzden gerçek hayatta okul saldırısı yaptı" demek için yeterli değil.
Yani burada kolay cevaplar değil, karmaşık bir gerçekle karşı karşıyayız.
Bu mesele, bir çocuğun hangi diziyi izlediğiyle ya da hangi video oyununu oynadığıyla açıklanamaz.
Araştırmalar bize; silaha erişim, yoksulluk, eşitsizlik, sosyal dışlanma, kriz anları ve zayıf destek sistemleri gibi toplumsal ve yapısal etkenlerin birlikte düşünülmesi gerektiğini gösteriyor.
Bugün, okullarda yaşanan silahlı saldırılar nedeniyle çok derin bir üzüntü içindeyim. Ben de Virginia Üniversitesi'nde bir öğrencinin silahla arkadaşlarını öldürdüğü bir olayın ardından bu konuyu çalışmaya başladım. Bu yüzden şunu söylemek istiyorum:
Silah şiddeti tek bir nedene indirgenemez.

One piece of advice:
Practice. Edit, pitch, revise, repeat.
Congratulations to all organizers and participants!
Presenters who maintained eye contact, organized their ideas with precision, and communicated both the project’s purpose and their relationship to the concept stood out!
Framing, camera movement, editing, casting, and performance produced meaning consistent with that concept.
I evaluate pitches with filmmakers Ezra Rose and Kevin Everson.
Effective pitches defined a single concept, established stakes, and outlined a viable path to production.
Last week I served on the jury for the Virginia Student Film Festival.
A few observations:
The strongest films had a clear concept and delivered it through close attention to image and sound.
