@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com as you went to Hungary for the election and that makes you an expert now, do you have any good sources for keeping up with political events there? Curious if the new guy walks the walk...

This war is so damn confusing. It’s why we shouldn’t let drunks and dementia patients run it.

Some years ago we had a battery die in one. Couldn't find a spare, so took the alarm off the ceiling. Internal backup capacitor can run the beep for hours, and it's connected friends all then decided to beep to tell me that one was missing. Ended up with three alarms in the shed that night.

I heard a feasible explanation that because it's cooler at night the battery is a tiny bit less efficient and if it's _right_ on the edge that will trip it into "low battery" state. So the answer is to put the heating on full power overnight and replace the batteries in the morning :)

But they still beep when the battery is low

People sneer at Trump and Vance, but look how quickly they have moved to negotiating with Iran the conditions for Iran's unconditional surrender.

If it’s such a ‘gold mine’ why did the 14 year period of the last Conservative government, throughout which it pursued a policy of issuing licenses and maximising oil and gas production, end up being defined by austerity and the worst wage growth since the Napoleonic era?

Every time I walk past this boatyard on the way into Falmouth, I think 'Up the stairs, left onto the white bit, use diagonal ladder, lump left onto bouncy bit, onto the roof and on to the next level'

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

More context on this #Artemis II image:

* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right

* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

I am not an April fools person, not at all, but The Phoenix is the one exception. Every year they prank kids with a different ‘wrong’ magazine, and every year the dedication to the bit is outSTANDING 🫡

Can you imagine just how much fun your average school kid would have seeing what they could get her to repeat in the press?

They were trying and failing to get people to subscribe at $20/mo and each 60 second video was costing the company $15-18 in costs to make.

That’s it, everybody, right there. That’s the Economics of AI. Visionary stuff.
