One of the fun* things about working in accountancy is finding out how many variations there are on "people looking thoughtfull while reflected in a window" photos there are.

*Not really.

I've had an email from a solicitor titled "Formal Legal Notice Regarding Your Business Name", which smells like a scam to get us to spend money with that solicitor to register a trademark application.

Anybody else had similar? Is it just a scam? Anything we should worry about?

>> Overstewed tea? Underbrewed coffee? Not a scooby.
One thing for sure, it was the most unpleasant liquid ever to pass my lips (in either direction).

[I later discovered from an old friend in the local trade that it was common to use the same machine for both & not bother rinsing it between brews]

Was at a resort in Canada as overnight halt on an international car rally & one of the German crews called me to their breakfast table.
"You're English - can you tell us please, is this tea or is it coffee?" they asked, proffering a mug of dark liquid.
Reader, I could not tell.

I still recall similar light at the opposite end of the day illuminating wind farms north of Paris against a stunning winter sky, heading home on a Eurostar. My attempts to capture it on phone camera fell so much further short of the reality I didn’t even keep them. Just the memories, now rekindled.

Just heard about an insane "tax avoidance" scheme being pitched to recruitment agencies, involving paying HMRC with a "bill of exchange".

I'd think it was a joke if it hadn't come from an unimpeachable source.

If you come across this, do get in touch in complete confidence.

Took 15 minutes to boot up on Saturday. I wouldn't have minded so much but it took 20 minutes on Friday, also for updates. None of which actually seem to improve the user experience, though that of course is a different matter.

Well if it’s got an MOT and the owner’s happy I suppose we shouldn’t complain?
(Doesn’t mean *we* have to enjoy it, but spoiling other people’s fun shouldn’t be undertaken lightly)

Eww. Not a simple polish out, and not like someone wouldn't have noticed themselves doing it. And yet not sure what we can do but *sigh*; just seems to be so common (in every sense of the word, especially the most pejorative ones) these days.

Had to help my Dad get back into Outlook on PC yesterday; it said he needed to verify via MS Authenticator on phone; sending request to Authenticator generated a code in Authenticator which could only be input into PC by clicking on the “I cannot access Authenticator at the moment” option…

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 2961:
Your voice is unique. It’s a combination of many factors: your upbringing and background; the books you’ve read; your personality. Some people may not like it, but it’s yours. Keep it authentic. Trying to sound like someone else is a betrayal of who you are.

You've certainly got at least one of your five a day with the bitters, and honey is always good for you. Not to mention all those herbs in the vermouth; practically a salad...

[Checks original post; notes that there is no qualifier as to what the drink does for health, so may be on the wrong track]

A great opportunity for talented young percussionists this summer: www.nype.org.uk Week long residential at Wells Cathedral School with tuition, mentoring etc; bonus for participants is the icebreaker fun fact "I stayed in the oldest inhabited street in Europe for a week" (Vicars Close, Wells).

Another fun fact: the mismatch between what strengths of medicinal cannabis are legal where means that technically some MNE investments trigger AML legislation, as the products marketed legally by some multinationals would be illegal in other jurisdictions. (I've forgotten the precise details)

ISTR seeing stories/articles about "AI-enhanced" games failing to hit the spot with customers - anyone got any good links to reliable sources on just how much of an issue it really is?

I've just read the other replies to this and am now backing away, very carefully, while making a list of people to absolutely never get on the wrong side of.

A publicity shot for 1980s TV series "Hardcastle and McCormick". THe two lead characters are pictured against a backdrop showing the Coyote, a racing prototype which one of the lead characters drove (and which frequently featured as a plot device)

There's something about "those who need the rules won't follow them, while those who'd follow them don't need them" when it comes to regulation of businesses. HMRC's justification for MTD was data integrity to tackle tax gap, but [because reasons] that has been compromised during rollout anyway.

It's more about businesses which can run up debts/cause social harm then go bust - the owners/perpetrators are only on the hook for eg £100 & society bears the rest of the cost of unpaid creditors, environmental cleanup etc. Not dissimilar to moral hazard arguments around insurance.
