“It’s a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what they’re not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,” Wyle says. “You take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where you’re now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who aren’t accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.

“Second point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eye—and only shooting from the point of view of a human being that’s present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. There’s no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you can’t leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as we’re on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you don’t get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, it’s going to pop.”

Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. “Fourth point: The election went the other way,” he says with a shrug. “We could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth point—this is essentially competence porn. You’re watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you don’t know how to do it, and you’re so fucking glad that they’re there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. You’re so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.”

To add to this: It will also make you a better, more empathetic collaborator if you're working with artists. Just by having made the attempt yourself, you'll better be able to communicate -- not only your ideas for the project, but also to understand the needs of your other teammates.

I'm speaking at GDC again! I'll be joining @richardrouse.bsky.social's "Rules of the Game" talk, as well as returning for @toiya.bsky.social's "Q&A for New Writers" panel.

I love connecting with narrative design and cinematics folks while I'm out there. Let's hangout!

Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump — 3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.

A Game Doesn't Need To Be ‘By And For Fans’ Life Is Strange: Reunion could be a story that grapples with old choices and mistakes, or it could be one that tells fans and characters they "deserve" stories that make everything OK

A fresh one from me! I wrote about fandom, what characters "deserve," lesbians and our desire to Return To The Past.

What does it mean to wind back the clock and why does that seem to be *the* thing many folks want from art now?

The image is a screenshot of the machine from the game TR-49. It's a contraption of wires and levers, with a glowing circular screen, and a code-entry window of two letter followed by two numbers. There's a face floating in the glass of the screen.

Btw, we've been sharing reviews all morning, but a lot have spoilers in them! TR-49 is best experienced as it presents itself. Set yourself 2 hours.

Curl up with an iPad or Deck, if you can. Have a pen handy if you like: definitely a cup of tea, so it can go cold.

Trust us. The TR49 has got you.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think it’s incredibly crass to demand certain (controversial) story beats from your writing team, fire that writing team, then throw that writing team under the bus for decisions *they didn’t make* while marketing your new thing.
Very crass! Very ick!

2026, I don't want to see another post about 'layoff-proof" advice.

"Here's how your resume can be layoff proof" absolutely not, workers can't change the cash flow of a company or the expectations of studio leadership in a way that is big enough to avoid a furlough/layoff/mass firing.

Borderlands Gortys Plush by YouTooz Bring home this adorable ball of sunshine from Pandora!

Holy shit I just found out that Gearbox made a plush of Gortys from “Tales from the Borderlands”?? This might be the first time I’ve ever seen official merch of a character I helped create.
