if it does, then you can use gammastep with -m drm to change it in the same way in VTs, and (afaik) you'll have to poke KDE over dbus for it to change in the session. if it's not falling back to gamma adjustment then the mystery deepens ...

actually, can you check if the brightness in the monitor settings changes when you change it via KDE? if it doesn't, it means KDE is falling back to compositor-level brightness adjustment (which i didn't realise it did silently...)

I'm gonna poke around on my system for a bit and see if I can figure out what's going on. there is *a* difference between the command line ddcutil and whatever kde's doing, but not sure what it is atm

my understanding is that the kde powerdevil service tries to take exclusive control of the ddc stuff when it starts, so if you want it to work while kde's running then it's definitely worth looking into talking to that over dbus

kde uses ddcutil internally for backlight control, along with the regular sys/class thing and a compositor level gamma adjustment. the ddcutil output suggests that it just can't access the i2c bus. have you tried ddcutil on a clean system boot from a vt terminal or such before KDE starts?

it's over DDC, and it's provided as part of the powerdevil daemon. you can poke that over dbus if you want, or you can try something like ddcutil to control the screen directly from the command line ^-^

ooh I hadn't seen! I'll have a look if there's anything useful I can add, but most of this is just really hacky work that doesn't really generalise. this leak is kind of a dead end tbh as there's a lot of source missing that really limits what you can do with it

honestly, there have been so many spikes in pricing and supply chain issues over the past few years that buying anything new has kinda felt impossible for a while anyway. outside of gaming any of the computers newer than ~2013 are still usable so it doesn't seem too bad

came out to my parents finally!! they already knew and it turns out it's actually very difficult to hide being on hrt but oh well ^^;
