I loved doing this. Now that I’m no longer in the classroom, what I do is reach out about something of theirs that I read and found compelling.

This is my expert medical opinion as a sociologist. Side effects include feeling the groove, silky smooth vibes, craving sweet potato pie, believing you can sang and harmonize, and dancing the two step or your moves of choice.
For my people who are under the weather or just feeling some kind of way, I recommend three doses of Jill:
1) Live from the Front Porch
2) “To Whom it May Concern”
3) Tiny Desk (Monday 2/16 at noon)
I like to watch this episode of “She’s Gotta Have It” every once in a while. I am sure Borinquén folks have many different opinions about what’s depicted. But for me, from the BX born to an Afro Latina mama and NY Caribbean dad, it feels like a love letter from Spike.

This is heartbreaking news. Just unfathomable.
Watch all of the moves intended to destabilize, defund, dehumanize, and destroy.
Part of my day is being spent listening to both albums. They are stylistically different and each is uniquely powerful. I recommend checking out the version (Track by Track) where Terri Lyne Carrington and Christie Dashiell talk about their process between each track. #ProtestArt #MLKDay #FreedomNow
Someone on another platform asked for recs of women in jazz but I didn’t realize they limited who could respond. Oh well! Here’s the list!

Me, Myself, and I.
Thank you for doing this. It annoys me every time and I’ve been mystified by why dems let it fly and why journalists don’t correct folks either.
Our nation has a propensity for consuming tragedy, metabolizing it, storing it in the “that won’t happen again” file, and being shocked when it happens again. At what point do we recognize that some things are a feature of the system and not a glitch or bug?
I’ve not been in here much and realizes how much I’ve missed your witty commentary from that other place!
Well, given that this horrible event is what opened people’s eyes to state violence is actually further proof of why “say her name” as a call to memorialize Black women was important to begin with.
This is one of my favorites as well. My husband and I would yell choice NSFW dialogue to one another and crack each other up.

Folks in NYC tomorrow, go to the MAKING LIBERTY conversation on dismantling mass incarceration and book give away on Thurs. Nov. 20 from 6-7:30pm The New School at Wollman Hall. Shout out to Edisa Weeks, New School scholar and artist in residence, for curating the evening.
Edward R. Murrow reported on poverty in “Harvest of Shame” 65 yrs ago. For decades, FRONTLINE produced documentaries on the subject. This is about inequality and systemic failure. It isn’t about individual failings, culture, or character. But we already know that. www.cbsnews.com/video/when-t...
You have tonight and tomorrow to see this show, by Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard. It’s powerful. It’s gonna shake you. We must show up for the performing arts, especially now. Thank you @thefleatheater.bsky.social for supporting such visionary artists.

Excellent book. I used to teach it in my class on poverty.

What a life she led and what a legacy she leaves behind. We were blessed to have her on campus just last week for the Planetary Guardian’s unveiling of their Planetary Health Check.
As always, masterful storytelling.
Andrea is good people. 💕
