Yes it’s a war on Ukraine, an attack. They are asking for donations to support their defense against the attack. Where is the problem?

It really rubs me the wrong way when the news talks about how this isn’t just any neighborhood on fire, it is a “very affluent” neighborhood that has now been decimated by the fire. The fire is a tragedy for anyone, and I’m not sure how it being in affluent neighborhood makes it worse

“Will this be on the test?” mindset is one of the biggest sources of termite rot in public life

Yes! We do a lot of background on her relationship with Percy and specifically the loss. I think humanizing these classic authors helps to bring the stories to life for kids. I love that she was around their age when she wrote it too. The multitude of themes makes for great literary argument essays

What makes a monster? Is our primary essential question when I teach this book for AP literature. I love how the book resonates with kids every year for a very different reasons. I’ve been teaching it for a decade and it has a new meaning to kids every year.

My whole life I was paying for cable but I quit years ago. The only thing I missed out on was sports so it’s nice that those of us who don’t have cable can watch now. I would imagine more people pay for Netflix than cable now, so it kind of makes sense, no?

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all."

I’m from Missouri, where daylight savings just seemed like a normal occurrence, but living in Arizona where we do not do daylight savings, I have to admit I prefer it this way. Here, jobs adjust hours to accommodate other states switching, so it would be nice to make it go away completely.

Mine was a full year, and I had to pay a full year tuition to teach the class.

Background is a photo of library shelves packed with books. Foreground text “A truly great library contains something in it to offend everyone.”

As an AP lit teacher, I spend most my time reading classics preparing for class. I’d love some modern suggestions of books you just couldn’t put down. I need a modern Gatsby style read with vivid descriptions, rich characters development, and deeper thematic meaning. Anyone have suggestions???

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s perfectly acceptable to answer “books and cinnamon rolls” when someone asks what your weekend plans are.

We are not living in a commune, we are living in a society made up of households with different values. No one household’s values should be limiting the choices or access for other people, including children.

Parenting absolutely does just mean your own children. That’s why it’s called parenting, as in done by a parent. You are not other people‘s children’s parent. You’re welcome to review books or give advice when people ask, but you are definitely not allowed to parent other people’s children.

You are in fact, just a parent of your own child. You have no business deciding what other people‘s children get to read. Correct what you think is wrong in your own house, but leave public libraries and schools alone.

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this:

Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius.
If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

Nobody got rich on their own.
Elizabeth Warren's observation also underpins the argument as to why it is right for the rich to say their fair share of tax.
