You do gotta talk to the table about the themes you're going for bc it can be a Huge Bummer to have someone elses fantasy indulgence be "gets worse", but as long as you can find a neutral ground of no one feeling like they're carrying the emotional baggage FOR you then it can be interesting lol
They're steering for what they want (aligned with the goals of the party/campaign, ideally), but don't get (or rebuff) what they Need. Their desperation and agony in feeling themselves slipping even though they're "succeeding" compels them deeper into the spiral.
