I find myself surprised by how sad I am at the death of 90s-era JRPGs. Not that the games themselves are gone or forgotten, but the collective comprehension of what makes them tick, as a genre, seems to be basically extinct.

I'm surprised by how mournful I feel about that.

EarthBound (1995), Pokemon Red/Blue (1998), and Final Fantasy VI (1994) all have basically the same core gameplay structure.

By contrast, something like, say, Order of the Griffon (1992) plays very differently.
