So Americans are paying a foreign oil company to shut down clean energy projects here at home, using money that was never supposed to be spent this way, with zero strings attached. That is illegal, unethical, and a scandal hiding in plain sight.

MY SON JOHN, amazing film that could not be more perfectly calubrated to illuminate the incoherence of right wing american ideology

what kind of "-pilled" is it to think war in Iran is Actually Good* b/c it will hasten an AI bubble pop, which will be Actually Good** b/c it will bankrupt Oracle, which will be Actually Good b/c Trump's ability to retain power against popular backlash hinges on Oracle's mass surveillance program***

I agree with this and it's something for which community groups should already be developing concrete plans. I think reparations are already due.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.
And you know why?
Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.

i think it’s pedagogical malpractice NOT to teach at least a few that students will hate! I always try to teach at least one that everyone will stand together in loathing for the right reasons. Hating films in a rigorous, principled, prosocial way is something we should be modeling for students!

“Four of my children just evaporated,” Badran said, holding back tears. “I looked for them a million times. Not a piece was left. Where did they go?”
There are no words to adequately describe the evil here.

farocki if you want tomas’ trio? the matrix and ghost in the shell seem like the most significant ones missing here, but putting in a word for colossus: the forbin project, demon seed, and yes, AI.

That’s a relief to hear i suppose! i’d much rather this place be an outlier…
i’m laughably old-school about this but it feels like younger profs and graduate students i encounter have largely given up the idea that screening is a core pedagogical element of film studies, which is slow disciplinary suicide to my mind
it’s not always university officials who are cutting these. a lot of faculty at a certain university i work at have given up on the idea of dedicated screening. there’s a lot of excusemaking about student schedules but frankly i think it’s largely out of laziness
this film is too insane for me not to love it. especially impressed by the strobe/eeg machine that induces multi-layered psychic eavesdropping into states of possession. also the sick Goblin-mode Morricone score
