*goes on a 20 minute passionate explanation of Disaster Governance and an awesome presentation on Kudzu a student did*
I think I covered it sufficiently. #edusky #academicsky #disasters
In moments of considerable confusion, when writing well is a struggle, I turn to @npr.org. Especially the economic powerhouse that is @planetmoney.bsky.social. Do buy their book too!
Schrödinger's Strait at this point. #currentaffairs #news #hormuz
I've been writing more concerning my research, in laypersons terms, and providing commentary on current events. I've covered China's "sit and win" strategy, democratic backsliding, and the disintegration of FEMA and the implementation of the Alamo Approach lecternmedia.substack.com/p/how-americ...
Archivists are my heroes for this and many other reasons. Every time I've interacted with one, in person or here, I learn so much and walk away happy and fulfilled.
#Reading helps reset your mind and relax. Try it. Grab a book, put your phone away, and get lost in story, history, or a science tale expertly woven. On my docket today: finishing “There will be Fire” and starting a re-read of “A Farewell to Arms” #booksky #edusky
A humble thanks to @raulpachecovega.bsky.social for providing so many wonderful resources over the years. I've used the rhetorical precis and everything notebook since I was a new Grad Student. I use them in volunteer work, DMing in TTRPGs, and follow the same organizational practices in all things.
Capitalists have succeeded in arranging the future as a calculable source of extraordinary wealth, enriching a few in the present by imposing debts on the vast majority — and undermining the environmental conditions for a better tomorrow.
Long day, but new essay dropping at 2200 CET:

Immigration, War, Research. We've moved far beyond concerns of plagiarism and student papers and straight into a hybrid of Brave New World, 1984, and the Expanse.
A couple weeks ago, Nicholas Keung at the Toronto Star reported on how generative AI is being used to assess immigration applications in Canada...and how it's led to refusals because of stuff the AI tool added in, that humans (clearly) failed to check.

I have no shortage of words about my experiences in Afghanistan and the people lost. For this, however, no words suffice. Nothing covering the political, military, or humanitarian fits this dismal debacle.
Historical precedence points to wiser war, but the complexities inherent in the systems of relationships and power that exist in this different age make a path to peace and a successful transition of power on the world stage possible.
New challenges have arisen during this latest shift in global power dynamics. States and the complex mechanisms and relationships that comprise them are now interacting as a power vacuum develops, seeking both standing and hegemony. 2/3
Rival ideologies and states, some new, some ancient, are emerging to create a multipolar world where regional spheres of influence arise out of the space abandoned by a weakening American ideology and state. 🧵1/3
Ah yes, it's time to bike somewhere and read on a nice bench by the water.

And that, friends, is the story of my life.
Love this so much.
“The war is over on paper, but the war is not completely over in the land.” - Zone Rouge, cleanup efforts on the WW1 battlefields of France www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB-N...
I recommend watching this. New conflicts are leaving behind new horrors for humans and nature. #environment
Concur wholeheartedly. For instance, having a meeting about body bags for kids at your kid's school was a whole new level of nightmare fuel.
I hear that. It's been brutal for some of my students who get pinged by these dumb tools. On my end, I use em dashes, and have for awhile. Had to defend myself against a reviewer. As I responded, Frier had them in Pedagogy of the Oppressed in 1970 and 1993 editions. Em dashes aren't a smoking gun.
Returning to an old article. In this essay, I reflect on "The Message." I think it warrants a re-read and additional consideration in this time

I owe everyone a better way to interact with me, and for me to chat with you! Forgive me, I'm new at this thing. Dare I say I have alot to learn? #sorry
Thanks for the response. I'm not one to say history repeats itself, but subscribe to the notion that history does look awfully damn familiar at times.
Last few weeks in the #Netherlands. I bought a small action camera to strap to my bike and record my rides, so my family can look back on our time here after we return to a car dependent land; I'll make it work. Truly a bike and cycle enthusiast now, more so than I was before. #biking #urbanism+
Never, except for an ever-rarer few, an integral part of their being and development as people. In my experience, the pressure is greatest among student athletes. There you can observe the most traumatic effects of what I’m calling exploitative outsourcing that all students now experience.
Many work outside of school. They fund their own survival and housing and sink into unbearable debt. Under these conditions, college becomes an afterthought in the day-to-day dance of survival. At best, it’s a box to check on the road to a meaningful life.
I'd like to offer another perspective. What AI does to students is equally troubling when it comes to their time and development. Students today face growing constraints on their schedules. In the United States especially, the typical student must compete for increasingly rare internships and jobs.
Looking for an illustrator for a children's book, writing another few pages in the novel, and enjoying @planetmoney.bsky.social this week talking about book publishing. All while a cathedral bell tones repeatedly and ducks splash down in a canal. A few more weeks before returning to mountains.
