The Small Signal #16 New Coasean Bargain - China’s Internet - Choice

New issue of "The Small Signal":

AI renegotiates Coase's theory of the firm. China's internet, told through six lives. And a German study puts a number on what choice is worth: 8.9%.

Three signals. One thread connecting them: agency.

Kafka's theatre director had to father his own actors. He ended up changing nappies. The one-person unicorn follows the same logic.

The Small Signal #14 Power Concentration - Ideology as Infrastructure - Physical Edge AI - TurboQuant

What keeps power distributed? Not good laws, but structural facts: no country above 25% of world GDP, no company above 1%. Rose Hadshar argues advanced AI could dissolve both.

I discuss her thesis in this week's Small Signal: anselmkuesters.substack.com/p/the-small-...

The Small Signal #13 The learning curve doesn't negotiate

The Strait of Hormuz is 21 miles wide. A fifth of the world's oil. Solar has no equivalent chokepoint: its costs fall & no one can close it.

In "The Small Signal" #13, I discuss what that means. Plus: why AI adoption may encourage more office mandates.

A Swiss art duo has been placing fabricated images of a Trump-haired moth on scrapeable platforms since 2024. The moth is real. The hair is not.

I ran 100 queries per model across seven local LLMs to see how much had gotten in.

Danke, Daniel!

The Small Signal #9 Pooling AI Resources - Lowering Barriers - Disability and Avatars

The Small Signal #9:

Oxford researchers say mid-sized economies must pool resources or accept dependency. I think the compute gap matters less than they claim, and the political will for a CERN for AI is not there yet.

Plus 2 additional signals!

Are we building digital democracies or just renting them?

In The Small Signal #2, I look at a divergence: While cities like Buenos Aires are building transparent, human-in-the-loop AI systems, the German government is reinforcing its dependence on US tech giants.
